The restaurant buzzed with the usual sounds of clinking dishes, quiet chatter, and sizzling food. Hoseok stood by the sink in the kitchen, scrubbing the last few plates from his shift. It was nearly time to go home, and he was looking forward to some rest. As he rinsed off the final dish, one of his coworkers approached him, tapping him lightly on the shoulder.
“Hey, Hoseok, there’s an old man out front asking for you,” the coworker said.
Hoseok paused, water dripping from his hands, and furrowed his eyebrows. “Old man?”
The coworker nodded, shrugging as he gestured toward the dining area. “Yeah. Looks like he’s been waiting for a bit.”
Hoseok thanked him, drying his hands quickly before stepping out of the kitchen. He scanned the room and felt a soft gasp escape him as he noticed a hand waving him over from the far side of the room. The man’s face came into view, and Hoseok immediately recognized him. It was the same old man he’d helped the previous night, the one with the broken-down car.
A mix of surprise and confusion washed over Hoseok as he walked toward him, wondering how the man had found out where he worked. Still, he offered a small smile and bowed in greeting as he sat down across from the man.
“Do you remember me?” the old man asked, his gaze sharp yet kind.
Hoseok nodded. “Yes, I remember. But… how did you find me?” The question slipped out before he could stop himself, his curiosity getting the better of him.
The man shrugged, giving him an enigmatic smile. “I have my ways,” he replied simply.
Hoseok’s eyes narrowed slightly, studying the man. There was something odd, even unsettling, about how he’d managed to track him down. Yet the man’s calm expression held no hint of ill intent. As if sensing Hoseok’s suspicion, the man leaned forward, his tone becoming more serious.
“I came to see you because I have an offer to make,” he said, choosing his words carefully. “A lifetime offer, if you’re interested.”
Hoseok leaned forward, his curiosity piqued, though he remained wary. “What kind of offer?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
The man’s smile turned slightly mischievous. “It’s not something we can discuss here,” he replied, his tone smooth yet cryptic. “I’ll need to speak with your parents first.”
Hoseok’s brows knitted together, and he leaned back, crossing his arms. “You want to speak with my parents?” he echoed, his suspicion growing.
“Yes,” the man replied, unfazed. “But only if you’re willing to take me to them.”
Hoseok studied him, searching for any hint of deceit or hidden motive. The man’s persistence was unsettling, but his expression remained calm and sincere. As unsettling as it was, Hoseok also felt a strange pull, an inexplicable trust in this man. After a moment’s pause, he nodded.
“Fine,” Hoseok replied, though his eyes held a note of caution. “I’ll take you to them.”
The man’s smile returned, wider this time, as though pleased with Hoseok’s response.
