Ivy sometimes hated being the Head of Trauma.

Don't misunderstand, Ivy loved being a surgeon. It was what she lived for, honestly. The rush she got from pulling off an impossible save, or seeing the relief and gratitude on a person's face when Ivy told them that their loved one was okay was unbeatable. She wouldn't even trade the hard parts, the incompetent interns, losing patients, the difficult calls. Ivy loves her job, and she does every part of it with gratitude that she's in a position to be able to save lives.

But Ivy hates, hates, these boring meetings.

She understands that being the head of a department meant that Ivy sometimes had to do things she didn't want to do, like attend meetings with the Chief and the rest of the Department Heads, but that didn't stop her from hoping that a trauma would come in that needed her attention and pull her away from these mind-numbing budget reports. Maybe that made her a bad person, but what could she say? Christina Yang really rubbed off on her.

Unfortunately for Ivy, and fortunately for the rest of the general population, no one was grievously injured for the duration of the meeting. Ivy was almost completely checked out by the end of it, staring blankly at an oddly shaped piece of lint stuck to Roland's scrubs, while the Chief discussed the Cardio Heads most recent research project.

Roland looked at her weirdly, probably wondering why Ivy was staring at him like a creep, when Dr. Strickland turned her attention to Ivy.

"Are you still with us, Dr. Woods?" The Chief of Surgery asked, sarcastically.

Ivy snapped to attention, straightening up in her chair. "Uh, yes ma'am. Sorry, could you repeat the question?"

Ivy should be glad she was no longer in the military. Her commanding officers would have had her ass for that, but luckily Deborah Strickland (while still terrifying) was not in a position to make Ivy drop and give her twenty.

Dryly, the Chief responded. "I asked where you were at in regards to looking for a replacement for Dr. Castillo."

Ah yes, that.

A few days ago, Arthur and Roland had shared with them that they had found a surrogate, and were beginning the process of starting a family. Their surrogate, a lovely woman named Jessica, had just completed her first trimester and Arthur and Roland had just started sharing the news. Ivy was absolutely thrilled for them, and was greatly looking forward to meeting their little baby in around six months.

However, that did mean that Arthur, her best trauma surgeon barring her, would be going on paternity leave. And after that, both Arthur and Roland have asked to reduce their hours a bit in order to make things easier, which Ivy was totally on board with. This just meant that she had to hire another trauma surgeon.

She had plenty of time to find someone in theory, but both her and Strickland would rather hire someone sooner rather than later in order to have them get their bearings before being thrown to the wolves. They wanted them to learn the E.R inside and out, get to know their coworkers, and integrate themselves into their new hospital or new city before they started taking over Arthur's role.

So really, Ivy only had a few months left. Which would be fine, if all the people she's interviewed already weren't complete duds.

They were mostly fellows, or prospective fellows since the boards hadn't passed yet. But Ivy didn't like a single one of them, which was a shame. But Ivy would find someone eventually, she was sure.

"I've already interviewed a few potential candidates, but no one is promising yet," Ivy answered.

Chief Strickland nodded. "Alright. It's your Department, so I want you to hire who you see fit, but I'd still like to send over a few resumes to you and see what you think. The final decision still lies with me, though."
