Spencer sighed as he hung up the phone, flopping dramatically back on his bed with a wide smile on his face.

All things considered, today actually hadn't been a bad day. Sure, he was now in Provo, Utah trying to find a kidnapped girl, but he hadn't lied when he told Ivy that they found some promising leads. One promising lead, to be accurate. It was a hard case for sure, the entire team knew that even if they found Melanie Johnson, her life would be forever changed. They had deduced at this point that the unsub had likely made the young girl watch, and she would be traumatized for the rest of her life.

But they had also talked with the Johnsons congregation, and had discovered that there was a seventeen year old boy that was well known to have had an inappropriate crush on the young girl, to the point where David Johnson had to step in to tell the kid to back off. Spencer only hoped that this led to wherever Melanie is being held, because it was the only lead they had.

But after that, Hotch had told them it was late, and the uniformed officers were working on getting a location. They all broke off into their rooms, unfortunately they didn't have enough rooms to each have a separate one, so Spencer was sharing with Derek. He had been a little miffed at that, thinking that meant he wouldn't get to talk to Ivy, but luckily for him Derek went to go shower.

And as Derek walked out of the shower, that was how he found Spencer. Sprawled on his back, phone in his hand, a dreamy smile on his face.

"She's gotta be pretty special if she's got you smiling like that, Reid," Derek said, his usual smirk present on his face.

"She is," was all Spencer said, still not ready to start sharing everything, especially considering the fact that right now there wasn't much to share.

"Ah ha!" Derek exclaimed, triumphantly, "See you've been trying to act all cool, acting like you weren't chatting it up on the plane. But I see you, man. You actually like this girl."

"We've only known each other for two days, Derek," Spencer said, slightly surprising himself. It felt like he had known her for longer. "I think it's a little early to be getting excited."

Derek shook his head. "No, I know you, Spencer. You don't get like this unless you actually like a woman. So spill."

He let out a long suffering sigh. Well, what's the worst that could happen?

"She invited me out to see a three hour long Russian film, Derek. She invited me." Spencer stressed.

Derek's eyebrows shot up. "Enough said. Don't mess this up, kid."

He moved to match Spencer's position on his own bed, head falling into the pillows. Spencer's eyes followed him before turning back to the ceiling.

"She also.. gets things, I think."

Derek looked over. "What do you mean?"

"It's hard to find someone who understands how hard this job is when they're not in the FBI. And I mean, she's a surgeon, so it's not quite the same. But she said something to me when I called her about losing a patient. That it was hard, but gets easier when you know you did everything you could, as best as you could. That's how we cope when we lose someone," he explained, hoping that he made sense.

The two of them didn't usually do this. Sure they shared things, but heart to hearts in a hotel room about a girl they liked? Unheard of.

Still, the silence that ensued didn't feel weird, or awkward. Spencer could tell Derek understood what he meant, just by the way he nodded thoughtfully. Eventually though, the older man broke the silence.
