Skylar's POV
After getting dressed and driving to Sam's home, I wasn't surprised to see the front door left slightly open rolling my eyes I smiled, knowing that one of the boys had likely stayed over, probably rushing out early to meet the others for training with the Cullens and hadn't shut it properly.
The sight of Sam's place surrounded by nature, close to the beach and nestled in its own space, even down to every small detail, filled me with a quiet sense of home. Every inch of this little home felt like him—a piece of his spirit woven into the walls, a warmth that made me feel safe.
"Mum, can I help you cook burgers?" Nikita's eager voice pulled me back to the present braking my stare I turned in the driver's seat to see her wide, hopeful eyes looking at me I smirk "If we make them quick enough, maybe we can bake some cookies too?"
Her face lit up, and before I could even get out of the car, she was scrambling out, running toward the door in excitement leaving me behind in the dust.
I chuckled, gathering my bag and groceries from the back seat, and followed her inside.
After we washed our hands, I set up a stool for Niki to help me at the counter. "Alright," I said, meeting her gaze with a grin, "let's make Mumma's famous beef and bacon burgers."
She beamed. "Those are my favorite!" she exclaimed, and I reached over, tapping her nose. She crinkled it with a giggle.
"I know," I replied warmly as we began cooking. As I prepared the ingredients, memories flooded back of when Paul and I were kids, learning these same recipes under my mother's watchful eye. She'd taught us with such patience, sharing her passion for cooking, creating moments that became the foundation of so many of my happiest memories. My favorite recipes, including these burgers, were gifts from her—a legacy I now shared with Niki.
Once we finished the burgers and baked a batch of cookies, I helped Nikita get ready for the bonfire. Just as I was making sure she had everything, I heard the familiar shouts and laughter from outside. The boys were back, their voices filling the house with energy as they burst in one by one.
"Cookies!" Jacob called, his eyes lighting up as he spotted the plate. "Yes!" Seth cheered, reaching eagerly.
I winked at Nikita, glad I had set aside a special plate just for her. I knew how quickly the pack could devour a fresh batch of cookies, and she deserved her share.
Then, Sam walked in, his face drawn tight with tension. But the moment our eyes met, his usual carefree smile returned, and just like that, the weight pressing on my shoulders lifted. He crossed the room to me, leaning in to press a gentle kiss on my lips filling my body with butterflies like always he smiles at me taking a moment before glancing at Niki. Then his gaze returned to mine, a flicker of concern in his eyes.
"Has he seen her yet?" he asked quietly, his tone protective I look across the room seeing my brother who was already watching Sam and I "Sam whispering doesn't work with highted hearing" he gives me a look and I sigh shaking my head. "No, they haven't looked at each other." He nodded, his jaw tightening slightly. Even though we all knew this moment would come, Sam's protectiveness over my daughter was unyielding, especially when it came to the possibility of imprinting.
Sam turned to Niki, his expression softening as he said, "Hello, princess." She leapt up, wrapping her arms around his waist, bubbling over with excitement about our day in the kitchen. But then, as if by fate, her gaze drifted over to Seth for a split second, that's when their eyes met for the first time, and everything stilled.
The room fell silent, everyone watching as the realization dawned on Seth's face. His expression softened, an awe mixing with disbelief as he recognised the bond forming between them. Although we'd known this was a possibility, witnessing it happen with Niki was entirely different. I thought back to Quill's words about Claire, how he described seeing her like a little sister. His reassurances had eased my mind, but the reality of it with my own daughter struck a different chord "well shit" Embry mutters as Sam's hand found my shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze he ruffles Niki's hair and smiles "sounds good princess" and Without another word, he and Leah led a stunned Seth outside, giving him space to process what had just occurred. Paul and Jared stepped in immediately, drawing Niki's attention away with their usual light-hearted antics.
"So, you're telling me you made burgers, and I'm not allowed any until the bonfire?" Jared teased, folding his arms with a dramatic pout I felt like I could breath as they distracted her"
Niki giggled. "No, you fatty! Mummy said you have to wait! And she also told me your girlfriend's coming tonight. Can I meet her? Is she pretty?"
Jared laughed, crouching down to her level, his eyes warm. "She's very pretty, Niki. But you're the real princess here tonight."
Her laughter rang through the room, filling the silence that had felt so heavy just moments before. For a brief moment, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. But beneath the surface, an undeniable shift lingered in the air—something new, something that would forever change our family.
I took a deep breath, grounding myself in the familiar rhythm of cooking. I glanced over at Niki, happily chattering with her uncles, then out the window where Sam stood with Seth "Sky" Embrys voice broke my thoughts "you good?" I frown nodding I look back out the window Sam had his hand on Seth's shoulder, speaking to him in low, steady tones. Leah watched them both with a mixture of concern and pride, her arms crossed tightly. I met Paul's gaze across the room; he gave me a reassuring nod, and I returned it with a small smile before heading over with a plate of cookies.
"These were made with love, just for you," Niki announced, proudly showing the cookies to the boys as Jacob, Quill, and Embry joined us, talking animatedly about the bonfire tonight. Jacob caught my eye, his face softening as he asked, "You good, Sky?"
I nodded, glancing over at my daughter. "As long as she's safe, happy, and protected, I'm fine."
He gave a warm smile, nodding. "I've gotta go pick Bella up for tonight. I'll see you all there."
At that, Jared shot up, checking the time. "Crap, I need to go get Kim! I'll meet you there, too." He gave Niki's hair a playful ruffle as he bolted for the door. "And put a shirt on so her parents don't think you're weird!" I called after him, hearing his laugh echo back before the door swung shut.
Paul grinned, watching Niki with his usual big-brother pride. "Alright, kiddo. Forget about these slowpokes. How about you and Mum come with me in my truck to Uncle Billy's?"
Niki's eyes sparkled, and she threw her arms around his waist, clearly thrilled by the idea And we gathered up our things.
