Skylar's p.o.v
As I set out a tray of freshly baked muffins in Sam's kitchen, I kept glancing at the door, waiting for the pack to return from their training with the Cullens—a rare alliance if there ever was one. But lately, things had been different. Tensions were high, especially with Sam, and it was starting to weigh on everyone. The reason? Something called a newborn army was heading straight for us, and ever since Sam got wind of it, he'd practically put me on lockdown in La Push. I could feel his worry, even when he tried to hide it, and I knew he wouldn't rest until this threat was behind us.
Seth groaned, breaking me from my thoughts as he slumped onto a stool at the kitchen counter. "It just sucks, Sky, you know?" he muttered, frustration evident in his tone. He'd been told he wouldn't be fighting the newborns, and the FOMO was hitting him hard.
"I'm strong enough to take on those bloodsuckers," he grumbled.
I wrinkled my nose playfully as I handed him a muffin. "You're also young and still have a lot to learn, Seth," I said, patting his shoulder reassuringly.
He took a bite, sighing dramatically, just as I heard yipping and footsteps outside—the pack was back.
"Looks like they're here," I said, nodding toward the door.
Seth rolled his eyes. "Great. Now Embry and Quil can show off all the new 'vampire-fighting moves' they learned," he scoffed, though I could see the glimmer of admiration hiding behind his words.
I chuckled softly. "Your time will pass come, Seth. Just be patient," I said, giving his shoulder a gentle squeeze.
As the pack bounded into the house Jared's voice rang out, his excitement uncontainable as he zeroed in on the muffins. "Yes! You've been baking!" he shouted, immediately grabbing one and taking a huge bite, acting as if he hadn't eaten in days.
Paul came in next, a grin already on his face as he made a beeline for the tray. "Best sister ever," he declared, snagging two muffins without hesitation.
One by one, the others filed in—Jacob, Leah, Quil, and Embry—each reaching for a muffin as they launched into their usual banter. The kitchen quickly filled with laughter and chatter, the warm energy of the pack spreading into every corner of the room. Watching them together, relaxed and at ease, brought a smile to my face; moments like these felt like a gift.
Then I felt arms wrap around my waist, and warm lips pressed a soft kiss to my cheek, followed by another. I relaxed instantly, sighing as Sam's presence wrapped around me like a familiar blanket. He was back, and suddenly everything felt right again.
"I missed you," he murmured, his voice low and comforting. His words made my heart skip, and I couldn't help but laugh softly as I turned to face him.
"You were gone for, what, two hours?" I teased, even though I knew the truth. The moment he was away, I felt his absence.
He chuckled, holding me closer, his gaze warm and unguarded. "Two hours too long," he said, his voice so soft that only I could hear.
Paul, noticing our little moment, groaned loudly. "Ugh, get a room, you two!"
Embry clapped Sam on the back, his grin softening slightly as he said, "Alright, lover boy. There's children in the room" he jokes and I roll my eyes kissing Sam's cheek before walking over to Paul and playfully punching his shoulder "save some for your brothers" I say as he grabs his fourth muffin
Sam walked over to Seth's and pats him on the shoulder joining us
"So the newborn army is going to be strong I need you all on your A game" his tone changed as authority washed over him and the packs faces turn serious hanging on his every word "and Jacob I mean everybody" Jake's jaw clenches and he nods and Sam sighs scratching the pack of his neck "I don't want to loose anyone to this we need to work with the Cullens that means Paul no picking fights with Emmett" my brother nods "we've come to an understanding" he states and Jared sighs "this is crazy I can't believe this is happening" Seth frowns "I don't get why I can't help" Leah shakes her head "Seth your too young" he growls huffing "I'm just as strong as you" "Seth" Sam warns giving him a look of 'stay calm'I placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, offering a soft smile. "Seth, your time will come," I said quietly. "You're already a part of this pack, and you'll have your own chance to step up. Right now, being here, supporting them in every way you can? That's already a huge help."
He looked up, a flicker of determination in his eyes despite the disappointment lingering there. "Guess so," he muttered
Quil grinned, clapping him on the back. "Don't worry, we'll give you plenty of stories. Might even throw in some heroic embellishments just for you."
The room lightened again, laughter and teasing picking up as they all fell back into their easy rhythm. They weren't just a team—they were family, bound together by something deeper than blood. Even with responsibilities weighing on them, they held onto that bond with everything they had.
As the noise picked up, Sam slipped his hand into mine, giving it a gentle squeeze as he found his place beside me. I looked up, catching his eye, warmth filling me as I saw the quiet strength in his gaze. In that moment, it was like everything else melted away, and it was just us.
"You doing alright?" he asked quietly, his thumb brushing over my knuckles in a gesture that felt both familiar and grounding.
I nodded, feeling my heart swell as I looked at him. "With you here? Always."
He smiled, pulling me a bit closer. And as I leaned into him, feeling the warmth of his arm around me.
