Clove's POV

Training. School. Cato. More training. Even more Cato. Ignore Dustin. Love Cato. Watch Cato ignore Angel. Training. Cato. Training.

My life was all about these things this year. The games did not have a victor from district two this year. The girl was eaten my mutations, really terrible death to watch. The boy was killed by the district one girl. It seems that most careers from two are intrigued by stupid blond girls from one. In years where district two has not had a victor, the district one female has always been the culprit. Not next year though, Cato needs to watch out if he wants to come home. If he doesn't then I don't know what I would do with myself.

When me and Cato were younger, my neighbor, Thomas Fullwood went into the games. He was like an older brother to us. He helped us to train and was a great mentor to us. He went into the games when I was twelve. He lasted up until the final three, we all thought he would come home. The district one girl had been very friendly with him so, instead of breaking the alliance once it got down to only a few he decided to stay with the girl. The girl was smart, I will give her that. Once he went to sleep, she slit his throat. We all watched as she crept up to where he was sleeping. We were screaming at the screen, begging him to wake up. Oh course he never did, died at the hand of someone who he trusted. That was a particularly rough year for everyone.

In training we have all been working hard in preparation for the games. It looks like Angel and Cato will be this years tributes. With the victory tour fast approaching everyone is trying to cram in training. When the victory tour comes around it is our only training break if the year. The Annual District Ball is held in the Victors honor. This will also be the only formal social event of the year. I imagine I will be going with Cato but he hasn't asked me yet. I told him that if he wants me to go it needs to be formal.

We walked out of training, today is Friday and the ball takes place a week from today. As we head to our secret spot atop the waterfall Cato stops in the middle of the road. I look back to see if anything is wrong when I see what Cato has seen. It's my Father.

Cato's POV

Oh my goodness. It's Cloves father walking straight toward us. He appears to by drunk and is carrying something in his hand that looks like a knife. I hope he doesn't know how to throw like Clove. He continues his walk until Clove speaks up.

"What do you want?" She yells.

"Oh nothin, just to pay back my daughter for all the bad things she has done." Her father walks up to her and before I have anytime to react Clove is on the ground, and a gash from her stomach is bleeding. He starts charging toward me, he didn't stand a chance. I grab him and sling him toward the nearest tree. Still infuriated by what he did to Clove, I punch him a few times to knock him out. I hear Clove trying to get up.

"No you don't." I say. "I'm carrying you back to my house where we can patch you up." Her cut is still bleeding alot and I need to take care if her father. I call for a peacekeeper. There's one! I tell him about what happened and then take off toward my house with Clove in my arms. She looks so weak and fragile. She passed out on the way and her face is a sickly shade if white.

"Mom!" I shout as I walk into my house. She looks at Clove and begins working on the deep cut on her abdomen.

" She will be fine, I need to be able to look at her in the morning. Put her in your room and she will sleep in there. You can sleep in the couch. What happened to her?" Mom said concerned.

"Her Dad came back for the first time in a few years. He attacked her before I had time to get him." Why didn't I get to her faster? I promised to protect her. Stupid you, Cato.

I take Clove up to my room and tuck her in. She is still unconscious. Just as I am about to leave I hear Clove say,

"Cato? What happened?"

"Clove, your Dad attacked you and you got cut. Your gonna stay here tonight, okay?"

"Thank you so much. You saved me and took down my Dad. You protected me, just like you said you would."

" It's because I love you, Clover. Oh and I almost forgot to ask, will you go to the ball with me?" It seems silly asking after what had happened but today I was planning to ask her.

"Of course, but only if you stay with me until I fall asleep." She said tiredly.

"That sounds like a deal." I say. I hold her hand until she falls asleep. Wow, time really does fly.
