Phone Calls

My father and I had already been on the phone for what seemed like hours. He and my mother were trying to decide where I would be spending my thanksgiving break. Usually, it wasn't this complicated. Because we had obviously lived significantly closer before, I was usually able to see both of my parents whenever I wanted. As I got older and my parents worked on maintaining their friendly relationship, I was able to come and go as I pleased between the homes. I knew my father wanted to see me. Honestly, I missed him and my old home as well. It had been a few weeks since we saw each other but now that I was settled into my new home in this new town, he thought it was the appropriate timing to see me again.

"How is your mother doing? Is the wedding planning going well? I know how stressful all of this can be. I remember how upset she was while she was planning our wedding." He said to me over the phone while I rolled my eyes a bit since I had heard countless stories about their wedding since I was a little girl. "She once spent four days arguing with me about cake flavors."

"Well, luckily, she's not a pregnant high school senior this time." I teased back, reminding him of the circumstances leading up to their marriage.

"So it's going a lot better?" He laughed out.

"She's doing really good, actually. She's stressed but it definitely isn't that bad. Charlie's really supporting her. You should meet him," I said before thinking about it de a second, "But that would probably be a bit too awkward for the two of you, I guess."

My parents had been in an on-again off-again relationship for the majority of my young childhood. They eventually broke up for good when I was about eleven. From what I am now able to understand, they were teenagers that fell in love too young and they very simply weren't compatible once they grew up and grew apart. Until very recently, I had always felt as though my father wanted to rekindle his relationship with my mother. Hell, even I wanted that sometimes. But, it seemed as though everything was finally falling into a very peaceful and happy place for our family.

"If she's happy, I'm happy. Even at the end, your mother and I didn't split on bad terms. You know that." He took a moment and thought, "He's gonna be your stepfather. As a man, I need to meet him. Bedsides, I'm going to have to interact with him eventually when I'm picking you up or something. Won't I?"

"Yeah, I know." I told him with a small smile on my face.

"So, how is everything else going with you?" My father asked me in an attempt to make conversation.

"What do you mean?" I asked in confusion while I played with the ends of my long blonde hair.

"I mean school, your friends, something cool around town, a job, maybe a new boyfriend." He offered the topics and I could feel my checks blushing at what he said.

"Dad!" I whined and finished my descent down the stairs, walking into the kitchen to grab a can of orange soda.

"I'm just curious. I'm not judging. I just wanna know what you've been up to."

"Well...I don't know." I grumbled and then sighed, "I've kinda just been really stressed out with school and with getting settled. It's not easy to get adjusted but it's not as hard as I thought it would be. I think I'm okay." I told him honestly, looking down at my chipping metallic nail polish while I spoke to him and making a mental note that I had to take care of my nails later today.

"Hopefully you've been focusing on your schoolwork and making friends instead of focusing on boys. Right?" He said a little too suspiciously.

"You know me, I'm not really the kind to jump from one boyfriend to the other." I said while I was looking out of the window by the kitchen sink, watching Jake's car pull up into the driveway since we had plans today to study for an important exam.
