Like many other people, my father was starting on his thanksgiving dinner around the time most people would probably have preferred to eat their breakfast. As he was preparing the turkey, Jacob and I ate cereal on the couch as we argued over what we should watch today. Somewhere between an argument over the Gilmore Girls marathon vs. The Walking Dead marathon, there was a knock on the door and my father groaned.
"Hannah, could you get the door for me? I'm elbow deep in a turkey." My dad said with a little whine while I rolled my eyes and got up.
"For the record, that's a little too much information." I responded while I got up and went to open the door, "Do we know who it is?"
"I might have some idea. But I think it's better for you to answer. I'll be there for small talk once I wash my hands."
I sighed just a little bit when he said that since I knew that this might be awkward. I nodded and opened the door, smiling softly even though I was a little confused when I made eye contact with the brunette standing in front of me.
"Hi, I'm Christie. Is Luke here?" she asked me politely, confusing me more when she mentioned my father but as the words left her mouth, my father came up behind me.
"Christie, this is my daughter. Hannah, this is my girlfriend." He said politely as he introduced us even though I was still surprised by the fact that my dad had a girlfriend in the first place.
"Wow! It's so nice to meet you, Hannah. Your father talks about you all the time. I wasn't sure if you would be here today."
"Yeah, well, I guess we're all a little surprised today. My dad didn't tell me that he was having anyone join us today." I mumbled a little bit before deciding to excuse myself from this awkward exchange, "Excuse me, I should really get back to Jake before he takes over the TV."
I walked away from the two of them while they walked into the kitchen to continue cooking. At the same time, I picked up the box of cereal and walked into my bedroom as Jacob groaned and did the same. He was always really good at guessing when I was upset over something.
"Do you wanna explain to me what's going on?" Jacob asked while he plopped himself down onto my bed and started to scroll through something on my phone.
"The person who was knocking on the door was apparently my dad's girlfriend." I explained with a little whine.
I was pacing back and forth in the bedroom on Thursday morning while Jacob watched me with an amused expression on his face. He lay on my bed with one hand supporting his phone and his other hand behind his head. The whole time that I was pacing, he was scrolling through Instagram and eating cereal as if I was not having a mini breakdown right in front of him. I suppose he had learned to give me space when I acted crazy.
"She seems like a sweet person. Just give her a chance. I'm sure you'll like her once you actually get to know her." Jacob said after he locked his phone and plugged it in to charge by the bedside table.
"You didn't even meet her, Jacob."
"Well I don't think he'd be interested in someone who wasn't sweet."
"I know she's probably sweet. But he didn't tell me. He basically lied to me." I whined as I got back onto the bed, curling up with Jake.
"Your mother is engaged. You have an almost boyfriend. You can't expect him to just stay single and alone. Look at it this way; if you don't like her, you only have to deal with her when your dad has her over. I'm sure he'd prefer to spend some quality alone time with you rather than you and his girlfriend together."
"But he didn't tell me about her. My mother told me about Charlie before they even went on their first date. I just don't get why he didn't actually tell me." I said with a little whine as he pulled me towards him so that I could calm down a little bit.
"Maybe he didn't know how serious it was so he didn't want you to get too attached."
"If it wasn't serious, why would he invite her over for thanksgiving dinner? Isn't the whole point of this holiday supposed to be about family and togetherness?"
"Well, you brought me to a holiday dinner that is supposed to be about family and togetherness." He teased playfully while kissing my cheek and making me groan.
"I know. But according to you, we're predestined to be together due to biology or fate or whatever you wanna call it."
"I'm happy you brought up all of that. I've actually been meaning to talk to you something that's kinda important."
"Really? Is everything okay?" I asked him while I sat up a little bit so I could look at him and try to figure out what was going on based on the look that was on his face.
"You see, I've been thinking about this for a while. It's about your mother and Charlie's wedding. I was thinking, and I know it's really soon. Isn't it?"
"Yeah, it's on December 1st. Why have you been thinking about this, though? You hate wedding stuff whenever I've brought it up around you."
"I think we should go."
"We are going. I have to go. I'm the maid of honor."
"I mean we should go together."
"Jacob Black," I said in a scolding tone while I gasped dramatically as he rolled his eyes because of what I said and because of my annoying gasping, "Are you asking to be my date for my mother's wedding on Monday?"
"That depends on whether or not you're planning on saying yes."
"It sounds amazing." I kissed his cheek gently then started rambling about what he should wear, how I was doing my hair, and how I felt about the floral arrangements.
A few hours later while Jacob and I argued about the wedding, we were all sitting down for dinner. My father and his girlfriend sat across from Jacob and I at the table for dinner. It was a little awkward. I had never even heard him mention a girlfriend and now she was having Thanksgiving dinner with us.
Luckily, my father was an expert at small talk and making sure things went smoothly. I was just a little surprised to have her here with us. She sipped at her wine then cleared her throat as if to get my attention. Jacob and I both looked up at her, in synch as usual.
"So, Hannah, how long have you and Jacob been dating?" She asked me, making me blush bright red while Jacob tried his hardest not to laugh.
"Actually, they're just friends." my father said with a little laugh while Jacob made little kissy noises in my direction.
"Despite Jacob's incessant pleading, we're not dating." I said while I nudged him playfully and he groaned a bit.
"But, we are going to the wedding together." Jacob said, making me bite my lip since I had just said yes to Jacob.
"Together? As in a date?" my dad asked in confusion while looking at me
"Technically, it was only supposed to be a date if I said yes.
