"I don't understand it, Charlie. He touched me, barely a graze against my cheek. Why would that trigger my power? I thought it was my hands that...."

Charlie reached a reassuring hand out and placed it gently on Jeff's covered arm.

"Maybe it's your feelings for Alan. You've never been in love before, so we wouldn't have known that it was a trigger"

Jeff hummed, the tension in his brow obvious.

"Can you tell me what you saw?"

Jeff bit his bottom lip nervously, his body reacting as he recalled the memory that he had tried to bury.

"It was just a sound, the picture was too blurry. Alan was calling my name over and over, but his voice, he sounded...distressed"

His breath was quickening, and Charlie squeezed his arm lightly to try and calm him.

"Yesterday, after dinner it happened again. It was so short, I couldn't...but it was his voice again. Why would he be calling me? Where am I? Why am I not with him? I don't understand"

"Hey, it's okay. There could be a thousand explanations for it. Could it be that you've interpreted it as a bad situation, when it could be something totally different?"

Jeff shook his head, his lips stuttering but no words coming out.

"Have you spoken to Alan about it?"

Snapping his head up to look at his brother, Jeff shook his head. "No, of course not"

"Well, I think you should. Alan is a good man, and he loves you"

"No, I can't burden him with this"

"Jeff, you aren't a burden to him. The way he looks at you, damn, I've never seen someone so in love"

Jeff was scared, Charlie could see it in his eyes. He recognised the look, although it had been a while since he'd seen it.

"Talk to him tonight"

"I can't," Jeff shook his head vigorously, "It's our anniversary, he's taking me out. He made me breakfast this morning, you should have seen the table, he's so romantic. I don't understand why I'm not with him in that vision....I..."

Tears drifted down Jeff's cheeks as he failed to contain his emotions. "I wish I didn't have this stupid power"

Charlie had heard those same words from Jeff countless times over the years, and each time his heart broke a little more.

"Okay, look, forget about this for today. You have a special occasion to celebrate, and I'm sure Alan has something wonderful planned. So, go home and get ready. What time does his meeting finish?"

Alan had an investors meeting that he had been unable to rearrange, much to his own disappointment. He had wanted to spend the whole day with Jeff, but he had promised him a wonderful evening.

"He said he'd be back by four, and that I should be ready" Jeff answered between sniffles.

"Well, he clearly has a surprise for you then. Come on, let's go, you only have less than two hours to get yourself sparkling like a diamond, and you're going to need all that time"

Jeff smacked Charlie on the arm. "Oi! What are you saying? Alan says I always look beautiful"

"Yeah, well, he's old, maybe his eyesight isn't so great"

Charlie laughed as he dodged another hit from his brother. His tactic had worked, Jeff was laughing as they left the café, mumbling under his breath about him being cute in Alan's eyes. Charlie couldn't deny that he was worried, Jeff's visions had always come true, to his knowledge at least. His brother was happy, finally after so many years of pain. He just prayed that this time his insight into the future was entirely wrong.
