LUCIANO
MARIANOJust as my phone buzzed with a text from Adeline, my pulse surged with a mix of relief and worry. Finally, a sign that she was okay—or at least that she was alive enough to be texting. But given the way tonight was going, that wasn't enough to soothe my nerves.
Damiano shot me a glare, still riled up and muttering curses under his breath. His irritation only fueled mine; we both knew something had gone down, something involving the women in our lives. My gut twisted as I considered what that might be. Mia wasn't one to shy away from trouble—if anything, she gravitated toward it. And Adeline, was easily influenced.
I cursed under my breath. Nothing good ever came when leaving Mia with Adeline. I could already see the trouble written all over this. It was almost a game between Mia and me—she'd push, I'd pull back, and somewhere in that tension, we met. Mia wanted to break us.
"'Don't be mad'?" Damiano snorted, catching a glimpse of the text over my shoulder. "My girl has a knack for setting fires, and I'm willing to bet she's dragged Adeline right into it and now they're both going to get killed."
"Don't even start." My grip tightened around the wheel as we sped down the road, the Mariano estate looming closer. "If I find Mia's responsible for dragging Adeline into whatever this mess is—"
Damiano cut me off with a dry laugh, shaking his head. "Nah, man. Mia's finally calming down. She's staying out of this shit. You, on the other hand? Your girl's like a hurricane. Always pulling others into her chaos. I'm going to kill your girl."
"Not before I kill yours first." I shot him a glare, every muscle tense. "Adeline's not the problem. She wouldn't be stirring things up unless someone else got her started. Maybe your 'good girl' isn't as angelic as you think."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night," Damiano muttered, his tone laced with irritation. He lifted his phone, trying Angelo's number again, but it rang out to voicemail. "Damn it. If Angelo's in on this, I'm putting a bullet in him myself. He's got better things to do than get roped into their games."
Adeline texts back.
ADELINE:
Don't come home! Planning a surprise.LUCIANO:
You're lying to me.ADELINE:
Will Damiano kill me?I pressed harder on the gas, my foot instinctively pushing down until the car was tearing down the dark, winding road. Damiano's anger rolled off him in waves, only adding fuel to my own frustration.
"Okay, don't get mad, but..." I began, knowing full well that nothing I said could prevent the inevitable storm.
Damiano's face contorted, his sneer sharpening. "She snuck her out, didn't she?" His voice was a low growl, filled with resignation and fury. "Let me guess: Carlo probably did something stupid, and Angelo's no doubt got a hand in it. They all influenced Adeline, and now I'm going to kill your future wife. Good luck having kids with her, because I swear—"
