CASSANDRA
RUSS"You look amazing!" Mia grinned as Adeline zipped up the white short dress I wore. "How did you not model as a job? You have the body and perfect looks."
How could I explain to her that my job since I was fifteen had been trafficking for my father? Instead, I offered a soft smile. "I don't like the attention," I replied.
"Well, you're sure going to get a lot of it tonight. It's your engagement party... be happy!" Adeline cheered, opening the door. The ball engagement party was set in the Mariano family's home. Guests were already arriving, and my soon-to-be husband was waiting for me downstairs.
I had never met the man. I was expecting an older, stern figure—a stranger named Nathaniel Chester Castillo. The name alone brought unease; I'd heard enough to know he was the underboss of a powerful Vegas gang, a trusted man to Luciano.
This was all just a facade. An arrangement to secure my little siblings' safety. He won't hurt you, I told myself. He won't abuse you like the others did. You'll be fine.
But a voice whispered back: You won't.
From this day forward, I would go home with him, an unfamiliar man, bound to a life not of my choosing. I'd be unhappy... but my siblings would be safe.
For once, a part of me wanted to be selfish, to choose myself. But I couldn't.
With my head held high, I descended the elegant spiral staircase of the Mariano mansion, the soft notes of the piano filling the air. Guests sipped champagne, their conversations halting as they turned to watch. Every gaze landed on me, and it felt like their eyes stripped away any semblance of control I had over my life.
Luciano stood beside a man, tall and striking, his presence commanding attention. He didn't look like the weathered man I'd imagined. Dark brown hair framed a face with sharp cheekbones and coal-black eyes that pinned me in place. His gaze held something dangerous, something possessive, as if I already belonged to him.
