«Look.»

Adam pointed his finger towards a small, easily recognizable building. A church.

«...You said you father was a priest, right? Isn't that place like a second home? Shit! To think it could be and yet you live in hell!»
«Not really. Do you want to enter and chant some prayers?»
«Are you kidding? Why would I waste my time like that! Okay, I'll reveal this since you're a sinner. But prayers are useless ramblings!»
«Oh.»

And yet I prayed so much while alive.
Nobody even heard me.

We sat to rest under a tree some blocks away from the church.

«...How were you while alive?»
«Why?»
«Eh, just trying to make conversation. We're on a break from the search of the crystal, anyway.»

He laid his back on the trunk, palms under his nape.

«You may find this hard to believe, but I was a good samaritan. Of course, a boy of church.»
«Wow, that sounds super boring, and yes, hard to believe. If you were really that good, why did you end up in hell?»

I wonder, once asked that question, what expression my face bore. Far in the distance, the church's bells echoed.

«...»
«I won't judge ya. I know, it's strange coming from an exorcist. But you already did so many strange shit that I got used to your antics. So, genuine curiosity here.»
«I did nothing wrong.»

Not even a flinch. Adam crossed his arms.

«Bullshit.»
«I understand your confusion. But it's the truth.»
«The divine judgment is perfect! You can't be punished if you truly did nothing bad. Why are you lying?»

I lowered my sunglasses, watching him straight in the eye.

«It's the truth.»

He bit his lip, clearly annoyed by being hushed like that. I stood up.

«Break's over. And I'm tired of searching mindlessy. We'll use another method to return to hell. No matter how harsh or vile.»
«Eh? Forget it, we didn't even touch the food. And what- what is this method? What are talking about?»
«Eat while walking.»

I began to walk, not even bothering to put the sunglasses back on.
On the road, I stopped to inspect a poster on a wall.

"The Emerald Green Festival" A fireworks exhibition, apparently peculiar of the little town.
It would've taken place that night.

I took the poster and went ahead of Adam, who tagged along, full of questions, gnawing on a sandwich. He came into my direction, as the corners of my mouth curved into a faint smile.

One of the little town's perks was the lack of light pollution. In those rare moments the sky was free of clouds, the result was a beautiful starry night. However, their spotlight in the sky would've be stolen exclusively on the day of the Emerald Green festival.

All around the main square people gathered, from the old folks to the youngsters. Exactly in the center of the square a massive fountain pumped water fancily in four direction, a indigo glimmer coming from below. Waterworks from the earth, and fireworks in the sky.
The crowd had their chin up, watching intrepid. It was a question of seconds— right?

From behind the curtain I counted at least two hundred people.

It was enough.

The fireworks were charged up and ready to depart in the dark blue. Except the responsible for lighting them up were all unconscious, knocked out by the most basics of curses.
