"You're kidding."
"It's true! Iwa-chan likes Kiyomi," Oikawa repeated with more emphasis.
Biting your lip to keep it from trembling, you murmured, "I was sure he..."
You were sure he liked you.
"What?" Oikawa cocked his head to the side, eyes wide open with curiosity like a puppy.
He hated seeing you upset. He was your best friend, after all. That fact led you to be distrusted by most girls, but the select few, your precious friends, saw past their jealousy, and instead, felt in awe.
You grimaced, shaking your head. "Never mind."
An awkward, impenetrable silence hung over your shoulders like a heavy drape, smothering your breath. You wanted to breathe, you needed to breathe, but in that split second, you forgot how to.
Suddenly, Oikawa split into a bright and affectionate grin. "Okay. See you, (Name)-chan!"
"Right. See you later, Tooru."
Giving him one of your own dazzling smiles, you stayed strong while lifting your head up high until you turned the corner.
Once you were sure you were out of Oikawa's sight, you leaned against a wall, clutching your stomach, which flipped and turned erratically. Face flushed, you pinched the bridge of your nose, taking deep, shaky breaths. As hard as you tried to calm yourself, you couldn't stop the tears from leaking out of the corner of your eyes. Hot droplets, burning to the touch, seared their way down your cheek, dripping off your chin one by one.
Why were you like this?
There was only one possibly answer: Iwaizumi Hajime.
He was the boy you grew up with, watching him mature from a bug-catching, immature, wild little neighbor to a semi-awkward tween, and now your crush, loud and strict but at the same time, gentle and secretly loving. He had his rough edges, of course, but you adored them like nobody else.
"But do you see where that got you?" you angrily hissed to yourself, furiously rubbing your eyes with your fist. "He likes Kiyomi now."
Obviously he would like Kiyomi. Practically every guy swooned over her. Luscious brown hair, cascading waves rippling down just below her shoulders. Beautiful, water-blue eyes glistened under her thick, dark lashes. Puckered, glossed lips sang a bewitching Siren's song for her over-sized fan club. She was the female equivalent of Oikawa.
You sighed, the last of your tears collected on your shirt and dried. Sniffling, you ran through how lunch would go.
You imagined walking to your table, ignoring Iwaizumi's piercing stare, which you oddly found to be constantly fixated on you. You would greet your friends and dig into lunch, never looking back.
If only it actually went that way.
"(Name)!!" A friend, Kou, ran up to you, planting a sloppy kiss on your cheek. He was the only physically affectionate male in Aobajousai, and he was sure to show it off to every friend he had. He had bright golden hair and a gentle smattering of freckles. (Your friends referred to him as 'A shining gem in the sea of idiots'.)
But he wasn't dumb.
Furrowing his thick dark-blond brows, he asked, "What's wrong? Is this about that guy you like?"
You nodded, partly ashamed, adding, "I heard he likes Kiyomi."
"Kiyomi? Kiyomi ?!"
He laughed, hugging his lunch bag. "Any guy who likes her is probably a fuckboy, that's what."
Kira, your other friend, voiced her agreement. She had a habit of appearing suddenly in places, scaring people.
"Let's get lunch, (Name)..." Extending one of her hands to you and using the other to push up her glasses, she accompanied you to the lunch table.
Hazarding a quick peek, you saw Iwaizumi's profile snap forward. A ghost of a smile tugged at your lips at seeing him, and you couldn't control the sickening butterflies in your stomach.
Heart wrenching, you still managed to stomach your lunch.
Casually swinging an arm around your shoulders, Kou ruffled your hair, saying, "Good luck with lovely trash!" before skipping off.
Kira nodded, waving goodbye while disappearing into the crowd, like a shadow.
Weakly, you headed off to your next class.
With Iwaizumi.
You were rather early, and made every effort possibly to prepare yourself for avoiding him. You set up a barricade of binders on your desk and buried your nose into a sizable book, pretending to study.
Despite your efforts, Iwaizumi still approached you once class finished.
You were hit with a wave of the familiar smell of fresh laundry, sweat and deodorant, mixed into a powerful, intoxicating concoction. Your head twisted to look at him, despite your previous plan.
You were rewarded with the sight of a shivering Iwaizumi, wrecked by his nerves.
"(N-Name)... chan..." His voice was strained, but to your surprise, Iwaizumi was blushing as red as the cover to the book your were 'reading'.
"Iwa-kun." Your voice came out colder, emptier than you expected.
He was panicking, his usual cool slipping from his sweaty fingers like raindrops. He wiped them on his pants and opened his mouth, mumbling incoherent phrases with his flitting eyes cast to the ground.
"Yes?"
"I... (Name)!" With new resolve, he made direct eye contact with you. "(Name)-chan, I like you!"
Boom.
In an instant, your heart raced as fast as his, maybe even more so, and you found yourself just as flustered.
"Iwai- but don't you- I mean...!"
"Kusoikawa lied. He told you that I like Kiyomi, right?"
You nodded, eyes wide as dinner plates, and shining like polished ones, too.
"He ran into me right after he told you." Iwaizumi looked utterly pissed, not even an ounce of shyness evident on his face. "If I were there, I would've beaten him straight to Hell, that ass."
"I still don't get it... Why would he lie? And why Kiyomi?"
Iwaizumi frowned, letting out a dry laugh that sounded closer to a cough. "Oh. Assikawa likes Kiyomi."
"Woah."
That was unexpected. Oikawa liking the Oikawa stunt double? It was ironic, at best.
The surprise and amusement was obviously evident on your face, as Iwaizumi filled you in on the details. "She rejected him, thought, so he was bummed. He's going to try again, but I don't think her reply will be any different. He's normally a cool guy, but he really lost it and took it out on you. Which is very not okay."
"Ah..." You closed your eyes, nodding. Everything was made clear, except one thing. "So are we dating?"
Iwaizumi immediately flushed as red as he would get after a hard, long match. "Y-yeah, I g-guess so. I mean if that's alright with, er, you..."
Half-lidded eyes watched him with a familiar gaze, almost too similar to the one Oikawa commonly had. "It's alright with me, Iwa-chan." You kissed his cheek almost teasingly and sauntered away, leaving the poor boy stammering and blushing from your receding figure.
Extended Ending:
"How was it, Kusoikawa?"
Oikawa was skipping around the room, daisies and pansies floating from his radiant smile. "She said yes!"
"Oh really?"
"What did (Name)-chan say?"
Instantly, Iwaizumi's face burned bright like a Christmas light.
And then, he short-fused.
