Ukai-kun said I should document this. I'm deeply troubled by the state the world is in right now... 

Why do we pollute it so? 

I must be at fault for some of it, I realize, and yet, it despairs me so, seeing innocent animals suffer at the hands of humanity. 

This is going to sound confusing, journal, but please bear with me. I've never seen such a sight that impacted me so.

For the past week, cigarette ash and engine exhaust had been the only meals for ravenous lungs. 

At last, the crow's body had grown too full of emptiness, its brain dulled by unappetizing scraps of trash. 

By the time I had found it, pink flesh had already dyed black, and the weakened muscles decayed, leaving behind a chilling skeletal carcass. Heavy, tar-slick feathers hastily dotted the perimeter, and the stomach, now lacerated by curious photographers, exposed revoltingly colorful clutter. 

The bird was stuffed with filthy trinkets, rejected gifts from humankind to nature: dozens of red bottle caps thrown by careless kids, plastic beads that formed chains with knots of intestines, shards of glass from a drunken couple's fight, rubber bands that should have choked the bird for a more painless death, the glint of two screws as long as half your thumb, the echoes of dead flies, and... How did a lighter get in here? 

The defeated look from the crow's empty, salt-crusted sockets asked the same...

How?
