"Toss to me!" the boy with the flaming hair cried, waving his arms with wild abandon.
He was like the bright, fierce sun at the peak of its rise.
An almost bewildered look was cast at him from the cold eyes of a taller individual with strikingly dark hair.
He was like a crow, taking flight in the middle of night.
Like shadow, like light.
"Please?" Hinata begged for the thousandth time that day, stretching the one word for quite possibly seven syllables. He interlocked his fingers behind his head, staring peacefully at the sky.
The two were talking on a reddened brick path to school, the shorter boy stooping to pick up golden flowers and smelling them along the way. The other was perplexed by the unfamiliar surroundings. He could have sworn he knew them very well.
Looking down, Kageyama mumbled, "I can't." Ashamed, he swallowed a thick lump in his throat. "I don't remember how." If only his black jacket was zipped up higher to hide his distressed expression.
"But... But you're a genius! You must know! You probably act on instinct, right? With a pow, and a wah!" The ginger acted out a series of rough receives and tosses for an invisible ball. Watching it fly into the air, he leaped up, almost towering over the setter, ready to spike.
Annoyed, Kageyama barked, "Get down... What are you doing?"
Hinata watched the world plummet around him, gravity shifting to an all time high. He felt like a roller coaster shifting off the delicate tracks, tumbling to the ground. His stomach twisted as a sickening feeling washed over him. If only he followed his gut, he would know that something portentous would be proven.
These broken thoughts tumbled throughout his mind as his feet smacked back down on the pavement, legs quavering beneath him.
He was unprepared for the landing. The crash.
Little strength was left to hold him up.
His heart hurt so bad. So, so much.
"Ka... Kage..." Hinata couldn't stop his voice from cracking. He thought they were all rumors. He thought his friend would get better. He thought things would be alright.
He wanted that very same car to run him over instead, to crush every aching bone in his body. To stop his heart from hurting.
Shaking his head, the raven-haired boy walked away with rigid steps.
At a loss for words, Hinata just closed his mouth, feeling his lungs get crushed. He wanted to cry, but he couldn't; no tears would come out.
Why not? he wailed to himself. Why did stupid Kageyama have to get in an accident? Why did the selfish setter have to leave him alone? Why didn't he remember volleyball?
They were questions that would never be answered, and he knew that for a fact.
After #9 was replaced by another regular, #10 soon followed suit.
Because without shadow, the light would not be noticed.
