This was probably the third time you left something in the gym.
Or was it the fourth?
You forgot that too.
All you remember are those dark, blue eyes, sharp and intelligent, analyzing you. Hidden beneath a fringe of dark black hair, they peered at you with an almost child-like curiosity, despite being narrowed under thin, furrowed brows.
His name was Kageyama Tobio.
You remembered that, too.
But this time, you forgot something important. You had a giant test coming up tomorrow in your least favorite class, and you needed your notes to study from. For a second, you got sidetracked by peeking into the gym and seeing the Karasuno volleyball practice, as usual.
Instead of looking for it, you thought back to the first day you met Kageyama.
Seated on the bleachers, you watched as each member rotated, practicing three receives in succession. If they couldn't they had to start over until they could. You found it to go pretty smoothly, despite a few rough receives from number 10, but number 4 was truly impressive. You held your breath, scared that if you exhaled, that little gust of wind would knock those perfect receives out of kilter.
Until you saw number 9.
He stepped onto the court with such an air of confidence, you felt yourself being drawn to him, mouth wide with wonder. From his curt nod to the coach to his pursed lips, curving downward into a serious, concentrated frown. You leaned forward, knocking a few of your books down. You continued watching him, nonetheless.
He got into a ready stance, knees slightly bent, arms out in the air, poised to strike.
You didn't even have the chance to see the ball slam down. In an instant, number 9's forearms slapped together, creating a sort of soft center for the volleyball to hit. The white sphere spiraled off his skin, leaving it red and stinging.
"One!"
The second one was just as exhilarating, as if it were your first time seeing it.
Your heart beat fast at the third receive, too.
But not as fast as when you approached him.
"N... Nice receives out there!" You ran up to him after practice, eyes never straying off him even when the others had their turn. Your back was completely straight. How the hell were you expected to relax and look cool? "You were amazing."
His eyes widened a bit as his eyebrows shot up, wordless surprise on his face. "Oh. Thank you."
As he turned, you knew you wanted him to remember you just as you would remember him.
"I'm (Name)!" you suddenly yelled, causing him to snap back, watching you.
He fidgeted for a moment, a shy, nervous side coming out. He lost his cool from the court, but you found yourself adoring this self too.
He opened his mouth as if to say something, but shut it right after. You looked up at him with such adoration, he found himself saying, "Kageyama... Tobio."
Something in your eyes pulled words out from him, phrases that would have never left his lips, otherwise. "Nice to meet you, (Name). What year are you?"
"Second!" you answered proudly, splitting into a grin so wide, your eyes shut.
"S... second," he echoed with surprise. Was a second year really taking interest in him? No, she must have only been attracted to his volleyball play. "Do you come to the gym often?"
