"Di"

My heart raced as I heard the creak of the main door. I turned my head, and there he was-Vidhyut. "I whispered his name like it was a fragile secret. He stood beside Arjun bhai, his gaze fixed on me, and guilt was etched all over his face. He'd lost weight; he looked leaner, his eyes shadowed with dark bags. What happened to him? I gulped, tears streaming down my cheeks.

Fear slithered through my veins. Why was he here now? He had never acknowledged my existence before, so why now? Was he here to ruin my marriage? I quickly glanced at Saransh ji, who gave me a reassuring smile. My heart felt a flicker of relief, and I smiled back at him, nodding my head.

I took a step toward Vidhyut, but then I heard it-a loud slap echoed through the living room. Roohi had slapped Vidhyut, and he stumbled back, lowering his head. Roohi's eyes blazed with rage, her teeth gritted. The tension in the room was palpable.

A gasp rippled through the living room. Family members stared at Roohi, dumbfounded. "Roohi di," Vidhyut muttered, his voice timid.

"Don't you dare call her 'di' with your filthy mouth!" she roared, slapping him again, leaving a mark on his cheek. I looked around at our family, their eyes wide in shock.

"Roohi!" I exclaimed, grasping her elbow.

She glared at me, and I quickly released her arm. Roohi was a force of nature when she was angry; her fiery eyes could burn a hole through anyone. I pleaded with her, giving her my best puppy eyes, but she didn't budge.

"What are you doing here?" she snapped, still glaring at Vidhyut, who shuddered and gulped, his Adam's apple bobbing nervously.

"Now what do you want from her?" Roohi demanded, her voice sharp.

"I... came... here for Rakshabandhan," Vidhyut stammered. A wave of happiness washed over me, but fear still loomed large. I couldn't trust anyone at this point. When I needed him, he was nowhere to be found. What had changed? I wouldn't let anyone taint my relationship with Saransh ji. After so long, I was finally living a peaceful life, where I wasn't just a shadow of someone else.

But Roohi laughed, throwing her head back as if he had cracked a joke. Her eyes brimmed with unshed tears. "Rakshabandhan... Do you even know the meaning of rakhi?" she growled, stepping toward him. She was trying to tower over him, but at 5'4", she was dwarfed by his 6' frame.

I was grateful to have Roohi as my best friend; she had been there for me through every step of my life, whether in sorrow or joy.

Happy, when you were happy, Tia, my mind mocked, reminding me of the reality of my situation.
