⎯
The night crept in quietly, a blanket of stars slowly unfurling above you as the last slivers of twilight faded into a deep, inky sky. The path ahead grew darker, the trees stretching up like dark silhouettes against the moonlight, casting long shadows over the ground. You and your companions had been walking for hours, the air growing cooler with every passing minute, the exhaustion from the earlier fight still lingering in your bones.
Aether's footsteps were steady beside you, but you could sense his gaze occasionally flicking over to you. It wasn't intrusive, but it was there, always watching, always waiting for the moment when you'd show signs of weakness again. And you hated that. You hated the fact that he seemed so aware of your struggle, as if he could see right through the layers you'd put up.
Tatiana, however, had kept her distance, her movements almost mechanical as she walked ahead, her eyes constantly scanning the environment, never once looking back. It was like she was somewhere else entirely, her mind far removed from the rest of you. You couldn't decide whether to be angry, confused, or just hurt.
Paimon, ever the chatterbox, tried to fill the silence, her voice breaking through the tension. "Hey, are we gonna stop soon? I'm getting kinda tired, and it's pretty dark out here..."
You glanced up at the sky, noting the stars now fully visible, twinkling like a thousand little eyes watching you from above. You could feel the weight of your own fatigue settling in, your body begging for rest.
"I think we should make camp here," Aether said, his voice breaking through the quiet. He'd stopped walking a few paces ahead, looking around at the forest clearing around you. "It's getting late, and we're too far from any villages. We'll rest here for the night."
You felt a small relief wash over you at his decision, even though you hated admitting it. Your legs ached, your head was spinning, and the thought of walking any further made you want to collapse where you stood.
Paimon didn't wait for further explanation. "Finally! I thought we'd never stop." She zipped around excitedly, already scouting the area. "I'll go find some firewood! You two get the tent set up!"
Tatiana remained silent, but she nodded once and began surveying the surroundings, her expression as unreadable as always. You couldn't tell if she was relieved or annoyed by the stop, but her indifference seemed to only add to the growing tension between you.
Aether, noticing the silence between you and Tatiana, gave you a small, knowing look. "We'll set up camp here, take a breather, and then figure out our next move in the morning."
You nodded, though a part of you wanted to snap back at him. Our next move...
Would it really be so simple? After everything that had happened today, and everything that felt so unsettled between you and Tatiana, you couldn't help but feel like you were on the verge of something, something that was bound to break at any moment.
