Notes for context:
1. Events from this chapter happen the next day after the events of the last chapter.
2. Regarding Hatice, she's not marrying Ibrahim on this timeline and she's actually very empowered and self-assured.
3. There might be some disturbing content (children being exposed to psychological violence indirectly).
It was the worst humiliation Hürrem had ever endured, and it was one of many she had recently faced. Hürrem was very upset, and was fully aware of the consequences of losing Suleiman's love, having witnessed herself the shift in his affection toward Firuze when he was a prince; Suleiman had fallen in love with her and stopped paying attention to the Persian woman again and Hürrem feared suffering the same fate of Firuze or even a worse one. Wanting to be alone in her chambers, she rudely dismissed the maids who were taking care of her sleeping children.
"Are you all deaf? I SAID GO AWAY!" Hürrem shouted angrily at her maids without giving them a chance to take the children with them as she ordered them to leave. "Damn you all! Validem, Hatice Sultan, that Persian snake and her daughters... and above them all, Mahidevran. Damn you, bitch!" Hürrem concluded, mentally cursing those she held responsible for her fall from grace, especially Mahidevran.
Naive. No one is indispensable in the harem, not even you Hürrem, after all the promises he made to you. Suleiman may have broken many traditions for you, but it means nothing after he discarded you and your feelings, moving on to Mahidevran at the first chance he got.
For a moment, the redhead felt that in some way, Mahidevran was the punishment she deserved for all the harm she had caused Firuze in the past. But she quickly pushed those thoughts away.
No, she had to banish those thoughts from her mind. If she wanted to regain control, she had to eliminate Mahidevran and her children from Suleiman's life at any cost. Nullifying Mahidevran, as she had done with Firuze in the past, was not enough to secure her victory. And by victory, she meant Suleiman's love.
Mahidevran was neither the punishment Hürrem deserved nor was she repentant about her past actions towards Firuze. Living in the harem meant to kill or be killed. Hürrem had made her choice and made it clear from the beginning. If she wanted to dominate, she would kill; others had to die.
" It's not just you; your children depend on you too. "
Yet, deep in her heart, Suleiman's rejection burned with pain for Hürrem as the loving woman she was. Despite loving the lifestyle, the luxuries, and the privileges of being one of the main consorts to the most powerful man in the world, Hürrem genuinely loved Suleiman as a man, seeing him beyond his status. She had never given up on the dream that one day he would close his harem and free her to marry her, making her the only woman in his life. However, after the incident involving Firuze's daughters, Suleiman did not wish to see her and actively avoided Hürrem, a thing that was hurting her deeply because she missed him. Hürrem had sensed it, but hearing him telling her directly that he no longer loved her had destroyed her self-esteem as a woman.
Or perhaps Mahidevran was correct about you when you overheard her calling you just another foolish, naive Christian girl from a backwater town that no one knows.
She wondered when all the pain in her broken heart would end. In a fit of rage, she took the mirror she had given Suleiman and smashed it to pieces. What she didn't realize was that in the next room, Mehmed was sleeping with Mihrimah and Selim, but Hürrem's cries and the noise of destruction in her chambers woke and frightened the children. Mehmed, as the older brother, felt it was his duty to calm and reassure his younger siblings.
"Mom is just going through a rough time... she'll get over it soon," Mehmed in his innocence tried to justify his mother and also comfort and reassure his siblings as best as he could, even though he was terrified. He was scared as he heard Hürrem screaming, throwing things, and breaking others, leaving a mess behind.
