With the battle won, the Telmarine reign had finally come to an end and the Narnians got their country and freedom back – and the remaining Telmarines were put under lock and key in the town of Beruna pending sentencing.

Aslan arranged a great feast to celebrate the victory and all Narnians were invited. There was singing and dancing and plenty of food and drinks available. Miriam sat beside Edmund and drank wine and laughed. They talked about the old days when they used to stay up late and play chess while drinking wine and at the end of each round, whomever lost had to finish their cup in one go.

At some point Miriam got up and brought Lucy and Susan with her to dance. The Narnians clapped their hands and danced with them, and it was the most fun they had had in a very long time. When Edmund joined them, he swung Miriam around and then brought her back to his body. It was friendly of course; they were good friends and it had always been that way between them.

Even Caspian got up and had the courage to ask Miriam to dance. They swept across the grass to the beat of the music, eyes locked as if they were the only two there. Caspian kept one hand on her lower back while the other was intertwined with hers. They stayed silent for the most part, their eyes said the words they didn't dare say out loud. Miriam had already failed miserably by breaking her own promise – to not fall for the prince. She wasn't just smitten anymore; she was truly falling for him.

Not even Peter could deny the obvious attraction between the two and he decided there and then that he would be happy for them. He was letting her go.

They feasted till long after the sunset had died away, and the stars had come out – and the great fire, now hotter but less noisy, shone like a beacon in the dark woods. As the night went on, the talk and the music grew quieter and slower, one after another began to nod and finally they dropped off to sleep with feet towards the fire and good friends on either side, till at last there was silence all-round. All that was heard was the chattering of water over stone at the Ford of Beruna. Miriam laid peacefully next to Lucy and Susan and slept through the entire night without even a hint of a nightmare.

The next day, a message was sent out all over the country with an announcement that Caspian was now King, and that Narnia would from now on belong to the talking beasts and the dwarfs and dryads and fauns and other creatures quite as much as to the men. Anyone who wished to stay under the new conditions were free to do so. As for those who didn't like the idea – Aslan would provide another home.

Miriam was staggering back and forth inside her chamber, trying to make up her mind about her decision when someone knocked on her door.

"Who is it?"

"It's me, Lucy."

"Come in." Lucy opened the door and walked in. She was dressed in a beautiful light blue dress that she had found in one of the many closets in the castle. Miriam was wearing a black dress that hugged her figure nicely.
