It took everything in me to decide on this plan with Malini. Actually her plan—something that made my skin crawl with absolute discomfort. But I had no other choice. Really. We had to know the truth about what had happened that day, what Nandani had done to me, and what her real intentions were. Malini and I deserved the truth.  To be honest, my arm was itching so badly because she was clinging to it. I really wanted to push her away. But I carried on with it.

She moved along with me inside MY room.

“Hume t-toh p-pehle se pata tha.. woh k-kisi kaam ki nahi.. Varun.”

I replied, “Humne hi dekhne mein galti kar di. Bhagwan jaane kaise hum dekh nahi paaye.”

Her steps were so wobbly that I knew she was heavily intoxicated.

“Koi baat nahin. G-galti toh… har kisi se hoti hai na,” she made me sit on the bed and sat beside me, smiling like an idiot, “Hum ha-hain …na t-tumhare paas.”

I smiled, “T-tum ho… issi wajah se toh khush hai hum.”

She circled her hands around my torso, hugging me tightly and I wanted to throw her away. She murmured, “Hum toh hamesha se the, Varun. T-tumne hi…kabhi hamara pyaar nahin dekha.”

I gulped, “Dekha humne… hume pata hain…tum humse kitna…pyaar karti ho, Nandani.”

“Pata hai?” She lifted her face and looked into my eyes.

I nodded my head.

Suddenly, she left my torso, held her head, and laid down on bed, laughing like a maniac. “Hahaha… aakhir kaar… aakhir kaar, tumhe pata hai .. h-hume toh pata tha… tum bhi humse pyaar karte ho.”

I stayed silent, feeling my heart race with guilt and disgust, my eyes moving towards the window. The window where Malini and Maa were standing. Thank fuck.

Malini blinked her eyes once. I knew she was with me. I had to do this. No matter what. For her. I need to. I wi— Suddenly, Nandani held my elbow and pulled me to lay down beside her. And God, she placed her hand over my chest, looking into my eyes with her hazy and intoxicated ones.

“Kaho na….tumbhi…tumbhi humse pyaar karte ho na?”

I smiled, lifting my body slightly up and placing my palm under my head supported by my elbow. I reached out and touched her cheek, pretending to caress her face gently, though it took all my strength to keep my hand steady. “Humne toh kaha hi tha na ussdin tum se. Ki hum kitna pyaar karte tumhe.”

She scrunched her eyes…knitting her brows. She pointed towards me, “Tumne?” then she pointed towards herself, “Humse?” …. “Kab?”

Oh fuck. Dammit.

“Uss din… Holi ke din…”

Her eyes flickered for a moment, a brief flash of hesitation crossing her face, “Holi..ke din?”

“Haan, hamari Nandani.” Humari? My foot.

Her eyes flickered again, but this time, she let out a small, almost triumphant laugh. “Tum… uss din.. hume …hume kuch bol hi nahin rahe the… tum toh behosh pade the.”

I clenched my jaw, fighting back the revulsion creeping up my spine. I had to keep pushing. “Nahin, Nandani. Yaad karo. Humne tumhe… chhua bhi tha. Hai na? Tumhe pyaar kiya tha… tumhare jism ke ek ek hisse ko hu—”

“Kabbbbb?” she whined like a child.

I leaned down and whispered into her ear, “Tumne hi toh Hume bataya tha na, humari Nandani.”
