"I'm sorry ma'am, but I don't understand." I ran my hand through my hair as I bent down and sighed loudly. This woman was starting to work my last nerves and I was ready to punch her in the damn face. And I wasn't the only one. Nate and Skylar, I could tell, were about five seconds from actually doing that. We were at the hospital and the woman at the front desk kept telling us that Madelyn had been dead for the past three weeks.
"I got a call from one of your doctors telling me she was not dead," Nate said through his teeth. He was trying to be polite but we all knew it wasn't working. The woman sighed again as she went back to looking at her computer. She started typing and then she hit another button then put her head to the side.
"Like I said, nothing. If she was somehow alive, they would have updated her stuff." I slammed my hand onto the table as I turned around and let a tear escape my eye.
"Hey, stop that," Skylar said behind me as she wrapped her arms around my waist. "She is here, and she is alive." I was getting ready to say something, that was until I saw that she-devil walk in. "What the hell are you doing here?" Skylar asked.
"I called her." We all turned around to look at Nate. "Layla is a part of Madelyn's life. She deserves to be here."
"Yeah, and if anything, I should be the one asking why either of you are here. I've never seen a boss care this much about someone who works for her. As well as her wife." I glared at Layla as I pushed myself away from Skylar. I didn't even get a word in as I heard someone calling Nate. We all turned around to see a doctor who was in blue scrubs and a white coat.
"I'm glad you guys made it."
"You're joking, right? You think we wouldn't show up." Nate asked with a huge smile on his face. They started talking which irritated all three of us.
"Um excuse me. I'm sorry to break up this love fest, but where is she?" Layla asked. The doctor nodded his head and gestured with his hands for us to follow him. We were led behind double doors and into an elevator.
"We kept her on a private level because we wanted to keep an eye on her. Although it was a miracle, we still don't know if anything could happen. We are still trying to figure out how it happened but right now, we are just thankful." None of us said anything because we all had a feeling this wasn't real. As the elevator doors opened, we all walked out and followed the doctor to the first room. "She is asleep right now so I do need you guys to keep quiet." We nodded our heads as he opened the door.
Once we saw her none of us moved.
We were in shock. My heart was racing and my chest was hurting. For a second, I thought it was just her corpse, but then I saw the heart monitor. A smile started to appear on my face. My cheeks went up and my teeth were showing. I haven't felt this in a while. I made my way towards her and so did the others. Nate sat on the bed beside her as Layla and I pulled up a chair. Skylar stood behind me and put her hands on my shoulders. I turned around to see her smiling at Madelyn. For a second, my smile went down. But before I could even think, I heard a long sigh.
I turned my head to see the gorgeous eyes I had been longing to see. She blinked a few times as her eyes adjusted to the light. Once she turned her head, she saw all of us, and her eyes went wide. "How do you feel?" Layla whispered. Madelyn looked at Layla, then me, then Skylar. She smiled as she then looked at Nate. All of our eyes were on her. She didn't say anything for a while so I thought she wasn't able to speak.
"Horny." I rolled my eyes as we all laughed. Nate went in to hug her and kissed her cheek.
"You look like hell," Nate said. Layla punched him in the arm which made Madelyn chuckle.
"Judging by a person who was dead for three weeks, I think I look great. I can't say that for the rest of you though." Her smile turned into a frown as she looked at all of us. I had a few scars on my arm and had dry blood on them as well, and I also looked pretty thin. Skylar's eyes had bags under them and her hair was a mess. Nate's outfit looked like crap and his eyes were damn near closed. And Layla had a scar under her eyes and she'd also cut her hair. It was now shoulder-length and blonde.
"I mean, I'm glad you guys were worried for me, but you've still got to take care of yourselves." We all nodded but none of us cared. Because right now we were just happy that she's alive.
"Well, don't feel so special. I don't look like this because of you. You can blame your baby for that." Madelyn's smile went wider than I could imagine.
"You've been taking care of her?" She asked. Nate smiled even more as he put his hand on top of hers.
"Yes I have, and she is wonderful. Because she was born four months earlier than she should have been, she's great. The doctors said she is still in critical condition. But I know she is a strong fighter." She smiled.
"Just like her mother," Skylar said.
"Speaking of, I didn't want to name her because I felt as if that was your power. But since you are here, I was thinking, Marie." Madelyn's smile turned into a sad one. She looked as though she was going to cry but instead brought Nate into a hug. I didn't understand what was so important about that name. I looked up at Skylar and she bent down to my ear.
"That was her mother's name. She passed away when Madelyn was twelve." I nodded my head sadly as I turned my attention back to Madelyn.
"I love it."

I sat there staring at my beautiful baby. She was very little and had a million tubes tied to her, I felt a little bad but then I realized the only reason she had them on her was to keep her alive. Now with that said, she's alive. I mean, a child who is six months old is alive. The doctors thought she was a goner but they made sure they did everything they possibly could.
Plus to be fair they thought I was dead too. The only difference is that I did die. Ha, this will be one hell of a story to tell.
I wasn't allowed to pick her up yet because she was so fragile but I was allowed to hold her hand. She was so precious and beautiful. I'm glad Nate thought of my mother when naming her. Marie Val Cooper. I was honestly happy when I found out I was having a girl because I didn't know what the name would be for a boy. "It's time to go." I turned around to see Skylar staring at the baby then looked at me. I sighed as I nodded my head. Today was my last day at the hospital but unfortunately, Marie couldn't leave for a while.
Skylar and I walked to the elevator and up to my room. Neither of us said anything because we both knew there was a lot to be discussed. I wasn't in the mood to talk but I knew that whatever has been happening for the past few months needs to end.
Plus I had something I needed to get off my chest.
"So are you ready to get out of this place?" She asked. I put the rest of my clothes in my suitcase and smiled while chuckling.
"Oh god yes. This place creeps me out."
"How come?" I squinted my eyes at her.
"Well, this is technically where I died." She nodded her head in understanding. She continued to look at me. I didn't bother to say anything because like I said, I wasn't in the mood. Plus I don't have the energy.
"What do you plan on doing after Marie is released from the hospital?" I sighed loudly as I sat down on the bed and stared out the window. That question has been on my mind for some time and I honestly don't know the answer. I mean I want to get away from this place. Or at least I think. I mean, yeah, everything is complicated and stressful, but then again I have so many people who care about me.
"I don't know. I was thinking about moving."
"But you already moved." I bit my lip as I stood up and went to the window. There was a reason for leaving that was important but I needed an answer before I decided.
"I mean out of Seattle." There was a silence that filled the room. I knew she was staring at me but I don't know how she is staring at me. After a while, I felt arms being snaked around my body. I didn't say anything because for the moment being I felt safe.
"You're not doing that." She said. It wasn't in a harsh tone but I knew she meant it. I didn't say anything because I'm not even sure if I want to move. Her arms moved up my waist and to my shoulders. I leaned my head back on her to which she just kissed my forehead. "I love you, Madelyn."
My heart stopped in my chest and my chest did that tightening thing again. My mind went blank but there was something that kept me in the right state of mind. I wasn't going to let my emotions mess with me until I got the answer I had been wanting to ask for a while now. I pushed myself off of her chest and turned around to face her. She looked at me with so much love it almost hurt.
"If you love me, why did you inject me with a sperm?"
