The Encounter

I wandered around on the surface for two days, trying to find food among the rubble.

That was the first time I heard their approaching footsteps.

I quickly hid among the rubble and waited motionless to see what would happen.

It didn't take long for two strangers to step out of the mist, fearlessly treading in an alien world. They radiated confidence, for there was no force to stop them.

They walk on two legs, just like us. With their two hands they held weapons, perhaps weapons, perhaps instruments. They were tall, and only when they came closer to my hiding place did I realize that they were at least four times my size.

They were greyish-white from head to toe, and their head was a huge sphere with only a large number on the front. It was as if they were faceless.

But I know that's not what they really looked like. It's just a suit of armor to protect their real bodies. And their faces are hidden by an armored mask, behind which a monster's face stares out with devilish eyes surveying the terrain around it.

The air of our planet is poisonous to them, but that has not deterred them from their conquest.

One alien was acting very strangely. He kept assuming strange positions.

He must have been the male, and it was some kind of ritual or mating dance. And in his hand I caught sight of some strange metallic object, which must have been a weapon.

The other did nothing, standing opposite the male, holding a small flat object towards the other which flashed from time to time.

I couldn't understand what they were doing, but I was sure they were a threat to us.

I hid and waited for them to leave.

After a while, although nothing seemed to happen, they moved on. I crawled out of my hiding place, and curious, went to see the scene for myself.

I didn't have to look hard to find something. Eggs. Lots of eggs, no longer alive. They should be glowing a visible greenish colour from a distance, but they were dark and reeked of death.

The aliens were up to something, but I didn't yet understand what.

It was a horrible sight, I just couldn't understand how a sentient species could be capable of such destruction.

What could motivate an alien race to commit such genocide?
