Echo + Deeper Pain Part 2

Takes place directly after Part 1.
Warning: Angst and Echo has ptsd.

Echo stirs awake underneath you, so you slowly lift your tear stained face off of his exposed chest. You let your arms prop yourself up over his body. Echo stares up at you in confusion.

"What happened?" He asks.

You stare worriedly into his face, wondering if he needs to know all the details, "You're all better now." You glance down at the wound on his stomach.

Echo's eyes follow yours. You can see the wheels turning in his head as the memories flood back. Echo's body shakes underneath you. He closes his eyes as his head twitches from the memories.

You quickly place your hands on Echo's cheeks, "Echo, Echo, open your eyes. It's all done. You're all better now."

Echo opens his eyes and stares at you with a fury you've never seen in him before. He shoves your arms away from his face with his forearms and gets on his knees. From the ground, you stare up at his towering frame.

"I TOLD you not to TREAT ME!"

"But--"

"I'm... FINE just the way I AM!" Echo's voice cracks as tears form in his eyes. He stands up. You quickly join him at his side.

"Echo, I had to treat that nasty wound. It could've gotten worse--"

"--STOP talking about it, okay?!!" Echo faces away from you and wipes his arm across his eyes. His body shakes as he stands in place.

You sigh and reach for his shoulder, but Echo notices and takes a step out of the way, "Stop bothering me!!" Echo's eyes plead with yours. Your heart breaks.

You let your hand fall to your side, "I'm sorry, Echo, I only wanted to help."

"...You made things worse. I can take care of myself." Echo stares at the ground, not daring to look up.

"I know you can, but that wound--"

"--Is none of YOUR BUSINESS!!" You flinch at his shout as Echo glares and walks farther down the path. You run to keep up with him.

You glance over to your side to see a tear fall from Echo's cheek onto the ground. You take a deep breath. How could you even show him you care?

You walk down the path in complete silence with Echo by your side. All you can hear is the occasional sniffle from Echo, and the rustling of leaves in the trees. You and Echo walk down the path, getting closer and closer to the ruined Teth Base.

After a long silence, you place a gentle hand on Echo's shoulder, "I'm so sorry, Echo."

Echo's shoulder shakes underneath your gentle grasp. He whispers so quietly you can barely hear, "You don't know what I went through..."

You lightly squeeze his shoulder and whisper back, "I'm here for you."

Echo looks into your eyes with a gentle gleam shining through his tear stained eyes. You give him a soft smile, hoping that things will be better between the two of you from here on out.
