Nikita was supposed to be asleep. Emphasis on supposed to.

But something just felt off.

You know that gut feeling you get when it's the dead of night and a murderer might be on the other side of your bedroom door just waiting for the right moment to claim your life? That feeling.

She sighed and took off her silk sleep mask (Brynne called her weird for wearing one of those but Nikita could not care less) and rubbed her eyes. Stretching, she caught sight of something in the backyard through the gap in her curtains. She leaned closer to the window.

Sheela.

"What the hell is she doing there?" thought Nikita, hastily getting up to get a better look.

Her sister seemed to be in a trance, looking up at the stars dreamily, almost as if she was waiting for the inky blackness of the night sky to suck her in and make her a part of their world. The sight sent a pang through Nikita-half irritation, half something softer she didn't want to name.

Nikita sighed and took her blood red, old Hollywood feather robe and put it over her matching satin pyjamas (made my herself, obviously).

Stepping into her slippers, Nikita quietly exited her room, pausing at the sight of Sheela's room.

Her white wood door, covered in vines was wide open, exposing her bed and the soft lavender covers that was hanging onto the bed for dear life.

Nikki rolled her eyes and sighed again, quickly shuffling over to Sheela's bed and picked up her blanket.

"Honestly, this girl," Nikita muttered, picking up the blanket. "She's lucky I'm the responsible one."

The house was quiet as she crossed the living room. For once, their parents were home and asleep upstairs, safe and sound. No danger, no chaos-just peace.

Nikita slid the backyard door open and called to her sister quietly, "Sheela!"

Sheela made no reply.

Nikita exhaled deeply, stepped down the stone steps onto the lawn where her twin was sitting.

Nikita shook her shoulder, "Sheela!"

Sheela turned around and smiled sheepishly at her sister, "Oh. Hey Nikki."

"Don't 'Hey Nikki' me!" whisper-shouted Nikita. "What are you doing out here?"

Sheela looked back at the stars wistfully. "I...I couldn't sleep," she said, drawing her knees up to her chest. "I just keep remembering and remembering and remembering."

"You could've just stayed in bed and stared up at the ceiling like a normal person, but no. You decide to come out here and look at the sky in the freezing cold." retorted Nikita.

Sheela chuckled softly, "It's not the same. Out here, it feels like..." she paused, searching for the right words.

"Feels like..." Nikita urged.

"I don't know," Sheela said. "It's so weird, you know? After everything, we're here. Together. Safe. It almost doesn't feel real."

Nikita softened at her sister's words. She draped the lavender blanket over Sheela's shoulders and took a seat beside her on the damp grass, the chill trembling through her slippers.

"Yeah," Nikita admitted, staring up at the stars. "It's weird. But it's real. We made it."

Nikita followed Sheela's gaze, her eyes tracing the constellations they used to name with their parents when they were little.

Her sister smiled gently. "When Ma and Pappa were taken away, I thought the sky was their messenger. And that they see us and... I don't know, send signs or something. Like, 'Hey, you're doing okay, kids. Keep going' or something like that."

Nikita shifted uncomfortably. She wasn't great at this emotional stuff-Sheela was always the one who wore her heart on her sleeve. But her sister's statement made something stir in her heart.

Nikki shoved her emotions away and rolled her eyes, "We're through it, Sheela. It's hard to believe but Ma and Pappa are upstairs and nothing can happen to them, so get your sentimental self back inside before you catch a cold. I'm not playing doctor again."

Sheela giggled, "You loved taking care of me last time."

"I did not," Nikita shot back, though her lips twitched upward.

For a moment, everything was okay. They sat in silence, the cold air wrapping around them like a second skin. Finally, Nikita sighed and stood, brushing grass off her robe. She held out a hand to her sister.

"Come on," she said softly.

Sheela grinned, glancing at the sky one last time before taking Nikita's hand. "Forever and always, right?"

Nikita rolled her eyes, but smiled. "Forever and always."

They slipped back inside, the warmth of the house washing over them as they crept upstairs. Nikita tucked Sheela into her bed, pulling the lavender blanket snug around her sister's shoulders.

"Goodnight, Sheela," Nikita whispered.

"Goodnight, Nikki," Sheela murmured, already half asleep.

Nikita lingered in the doorway for a moment, glancing back at the peaceful rise and fall of her sister's breath. Then she closed the door quietly behind her, the promise of forever and always still lingering in the cool night air.
