Chapter 22
10 months later
"Welcome back gamers to The Grind! We are coming to you live from inside the virtual world of The Ether!"
Norm Robbins, the prominent television host sat on a brightly lit stage with his guest for the night. They were surrounded by the stunning and impossible architecture of Castle Glamour. Not only that, a massive crowd of players had encircled them, cheering wildly. This venue was specifically designed by the game designers for broadcasting events like this. Norm glowed vibrantly in his virtual body. He had taken the form of a sun elf with long blonde hair, radiant yellow eyes and bronze skin. Sitting in the chair across from him was a large and impressive looking knight clad in shining silver armor. His handsome face wore a bright, if not self-satisfied smile.
"Our guest for the evening is an Ether PvP legend and wildly successful live streamer. Please welcome Gearhardt!"
Thunderous applause tore through the castle. The ground shook as all of Gearhardt's fans hollered and stomped.
"You're too kind Norm. I'm just happy to be up here with you, I've been watching your show since I was a kid."
"Well, it is always nice to meet a fan. So, Gear, niceties aside, we all know why we are here tonight." Norm's tone grew dark and serious. "You are a target."
A wave of murmurs rippled through the crowd. They had all heard the news. An anonymous third party had set a target on Gearhardt's back. $3,000 US dollars was offered up on the Ether Global Message board to anyone that could succeed in taking his prized possession. The Great sword of the Fire Giant King. To accomplish this however, they of course needed to kill the player in possession of it.
"Are you nervous at all? There's a big crowd here with us. At least a few of them might be out for your head and that big shiny sword of yours tonight."
"Well, I don't think anyone here will be trying anything Norm. After all, more than half of these fine adventurers are members of the Gearhead guild." Gearhardt's guild mates roared as he addressed them. He had created one of the largest pvp guilds in the US server, ranking 5th overall in power.
The host looked out at the crowd with amazement. They all cheered and stomped their feet.
"You really are loved Gear! That's amazing. You're a living testament to the kind of player that succeeds in the Ether." Norm motioned for everyone to applaud again.
"It's just about putting the time in really. I started out like any other low level player."
"A true rising star! And so humble to boot! Though we do have to ask Gear. What do you have to say about the recent accusations against you? The rumors saying that you have been exploiting beginners to boost your own status?"
Gearheardt shifted uncomfortably. He didn't seem prepared for the question.
He quickly composed himself, answering nonchalantly. "Oh well, that's simply not true. New players have always found a safe home in my guild. It's a place where they can grow and gain connections. You can ask any of the people here. We treat our newbies with care."
"I hear you Geary. I feel awful that someone out there would look to besmirch your good name. That's not even the worst of it though I'm afraid."
The knight was nervous but maintained a smile.
Norm Continued. "We have also heard from anonymous sources that the Gearheads have been running virtual brothels for some time now? A very serious accusation!"
Gearhardt's charm dissipated behind a veil of seething anger. "I don't know who these 'sources' are but they are lying little cowards. They're trying to tear down what I'm building."
