Maxwell's POVIt has been two days now since the death of my best friend (and crush) Chad Newman. I have cried myself to sleep these nights, which just proves how much I miss him.
Jessica and I haven't done any activities since his death and instead, we mourned for him. We talk about the good times we had with him, the jet ski race, the song, the drool (Jessica was not happy about that subject though). What came into my troubled mind these two days is when I mentioned my grandfather. She became pale for an odd reason. Did she know him? If so, when? My dad told me he was a great and honourable man, but died.
I really wanted to know more about him. Maybe I should ask Jess about my grandfather, see if she knows anything. I looked around for her and found her staring outside. She really likes looking at the scenery, that one. "Hey." I said.
"Hey."
"Did you know my grandfather?"She hesitated a long time, standing there spookily silent. "Please, Jess. I need to know." I said, barely a whisper. She looked at me. "One of my family relatives talked about him, despised him, giving him all known cusses under the sun."
"Why?" I said, my emotions mixed with anger and confusion.
"I.... I don't know." She said. "I just heard a talk about Josef Kruger, proud sailor and a fool."I glared at her.
"It's not my opinion!" Jessica said quickly.
"Then who's is it?" I growled.
Jessica stayed silent.
"Tell me!" I barked.
"Okay! Okay, my grandmother."
"Why would your grandmother hate my grandfather?"
"I don't...... I don't know." Jessica said shakily.I saw fear in her brown eyes. I deeply inhaled air, an attempt to calm myself, and exhaled. "I'm sorry for snapping at you."
"It's fine. You loved your grandfather like I loved my grandmother."
"You loved?"
Jessica turned away, not looking at my eyes anymore. "She...... She died in front of my eyes. Do you know how it feels to watch a person's life drift away and there is nothing you can do about it?""My baby brother...... He..... He choked to death. Swallowed a Lego block."
Jessica looked at me. "He was a person I loved the most in this world. I found him, bluer than a Smurf, spit running down his small mouth. Then his eyes, the eyes I can never forget. It still haunts me. He tried breathing but couldn't. I tried dislodging the Lego, I promise you, but......." Years were snaking their way down my chin."What Maxwell?" Jessica asked.
"I....... Killed him."
"What?"
"I killed him." I whispered. "I tried taking the block out, but I only managed to push the block deeper...."
"Oh God...." Jessica gasped.
"I'm...... I'm a murderer."Jessica held me by my shoulders. "No you aren't. You tried saving him but couldn't."
"I know but....."I stopped. I heard the door's knob wobble and shake. Jessica and I were immediately scared. The door shook more. I held my fists ready and started moving closer to the door.
The door creaked open.....
