Stefan's eyes snapped open and the sound of Cassandra's scream. His first thought was that she was having a bad dream. But since when did bad dreams come in the form of a team of paralegals? He froze when the couch made a creaking noise. Then moved quickly. The paralegals knew he was here anyways. Shoot. All the weapons were in the top cabinet. The locked top cabinet. The key was in his bedroom. Maybe he didn't need weapons. Just a distraction could be good enough.
Stefan walked close to the walls following the sound of the paralegals loading their weapons. What he would give for a good paralegal weapon, instead of the rejects they found in the trash sometimes. He couldn't believe that he paid taxes for the government to keep kidnapping him and his family. But the rest of his family was still sleeping on the other side of the apartment. Stefan was torn between his sister and everyone else. He shook his doubts away. They could take care of themselves. Well against a paralegal? No one really stood a chance.
Stefan crouched at the door, ready to barge in, trying to hear based on the creaky floor boards where they were on the room. Ready? He thought to himself. No? Well then let's go. The door swung open and Stefan ran in, shouting. Everyone else would be up now too. Another bonus.
"Let her go."
The cold voice of the paralegal mocked him, "Oh Stefan."
Stefan turned his head from side to side and suddenly he saw her.
"You mean her?" The head paralegal asked innocently. He clicked the safety off his gun and pointed in the vague direction of Cassandra.
"You want me." It wasn't a question.
"Awe. It's always got to be about you Stevie, doesn't it? But no. This time it's gotta be all of you."
"Stefan!" Cassandra struggled against the grip of the paralegal, but she was ok. Well, she was ok other than the situation she was in.
"I'm going to get you out of here," Stefan spoke quietly and calmly which betrayed the turmoil he felt inside. He was fighting a losing battle. With a rapidly failing strategy, "I-Let her go and I'll surrender."
"No!" Cassandra screamed.
"You act as though you have a choice," the rookie paralegal said with a smirk.
"Hey, I do the talking," the head paralegal frowned at the rookie. There was a pause before he said, "You act as though you have a choice."
Stefan rolled his eyes, inching closer to Cassandra. He sent a well aimed side kick at the temple of the paralegal who dropped into instant unconsciousness. That was the only opportunity Cassandra needed. She pulled herself free and swept the feet out from underneath an advancing paralegal while Stefan unceremoniously kicked another. Low. He'd be in pain for days. That left only the rookie and the head paralegal. An interesting pair.
"Sir, does this mean I've been promoted?" the rookie asked, hopefully.
"No!"
"But sir, they're all unconsicous and can't do anything so I should be promoted!"
