The half-empty bottle of bourbon sat with them as she leaned somewhat into him with the silent unspoken tension filling the air. Kat felt the blanket shift as he wrapped her up a little more making her smile.
The moonlight hit his face in a magical glow that made Morgan's face look softer and more vulnerable when Kat would sneak a glimpse of him. She couldn't help but feel happy that they were just there... with no expectations.
"I think you're afraid," Morgan piped suddenly, his tone was light but curious.
Kat blinked caught off guard, "Afraid? Of what?".
"Of letting yourself go and craving something more," he said nonchalantly as he caught a quick glimpse of her. "You're always worried about consequences and holding yourself back".
She opened her mouth to speak and deny his comment but nothing came out. His statement did hurt her feelings slightly but she knew he wasn't wrong.
Kat wrapped herself more tightly in the blanket before responding. "Maybe I am," she admitted softly as she turned to him, "But it isn't easy. Something more comes with risks. What if it doesn't work out? I like my time with you. I don't want to ruin it".
He stayed silent for a minute as Kat felt a whirlwind of emotions overtake her mind. He said he didn't mind messy. Did he really like her this much? What would happen when he leaves? She felt lost in translation with his cryptic words.
"It's a risk. But isn't it better to risk something than wonder about what if? Why settle for safe?" he finally spoke.
Kat stared directly at him, her heart pounding. It wasn't like she hadn't thought about it — settling for safe. That's what she did when she was with Max. But hearing Morgan suggest it was just different.
Morgan turned his body to face her as she stared at him, "Look. I'm not telling you that you need to figure it out tonight. Hell Kat... I don't have anything figured out. But I'm just suggesting letting it go... no thoughts".
Kat swallowed hard, the knot that was previously in her stomach was forming once more. She felt extremely off guard, overwhelmed and vulnerable. She wanted to believe him but all she could think about was the potential consequences and danger associated with him.
"What are you trying to say?" she asked.
Morgan's eyes searched hers momentarily before he spoke, "I am saying that I like being here with you. Let's just.... enjoy tonight".
She nodded with a smile painted across her face, "Let's do that".
Morgan got up as she watched him, confused by his train of thought. Casual fling to a relationship? What had possibly changed for him? This man was confusing.
Morgan reached into the backseat of the truck and pulled out a small speaker that was stashed away. Turning it on, the faint hum of guitar sounded in the air.
"You dance?" Morgan asked smoothly as if the whole conversation was behind them now.
She smiled and chuckled, "Not well. Especially after this bourbon".
"Well, lucky for you, I'm not picky," he said as he extended his hand to her waiting for her to latch on.
Rolling her eyes, she accepted his hand and let him pull her up. Her arms around his neck as they gently swayed, the cold seemed to disappear. Letting herself fully be immersed in the moment, she lightly rested her head on his chest. Rather than an awkward moment, it felt natural.... as if they knew each other in a past life.
"You're a great dancer" he mumbled to her, his lips close to her ear.
Kat couldn't help but grin, "You are one terrible liar Wallen".
"Maybe," he chuckled. "But Im a sucker for dancing under the stars" he said looking up at the sky.
Kat tilted her head to look up at him as they made eye contact blushing, "Very romantic Wallen".
"Mhm don't tell anyone, I have a reputation to maintain," he grinned before leaning in to kiss her lips.
The kiss was slow but intimate as she pulled his body in closer with her hands around his neck.
As the night proceeded, the music from Morgan's speaker softened into a gentle hum that went with the breeze. Kat sat in his truck bed with her arms around her knees as she stared into the sky aimlessly. The bourbon soothed her body and kept her warm as the cool air hit her skin.
"Should we call it a night or are you up for more?" Morgan asked as he folded the blanket up and put it in his backseat.
"More?" she quirked her eyebrow up at the suggestion.
He nodded waiting for her response as she pondered her answer.
"More it is" she nodded as she got in the truck. The kiss from before was injecting adrenaline in her brain as she struggled to keep still in the truck and her heart was pounding out of her chest. It was a foreign feeling but one she was willing to explore.
