“Umm, y-yeah sure. W-what’s up Matt?” I said trying to keep my voice steady. After all, this was the moment I’ve been dreading since that Valentines Day dance four years ago.
He was going to tell me off. He was going to yell at me for being such a crappy friend and dropping him like a hot potato…a really really hot, sexy potato. Well maybe even a mashed potato, considering all the beatings he took from my so called ‘friends’.
He was going to tell me how he came back to Oregon to get his revenge on me. To make my life a living hell just like what I’d done to him in middle school. I blinked and braced myself for the worst.
He stepped into my room and sat down on my swively desk chair and spun himself around just like he’d do when we were kids. He then looked at me straight in the eyes and cracked a small little smile.
It wasn’t an evil, conniving, revenge-seeking grin either like the Grinch’s creepy one from that movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Weirdly enough, it seemed completely genuine and heartfelt.
I relaxed a little bit and grabbed a fuzzy pillow to hug into my chest as I got more comfortable.
“How have you been Jen?” he asked still smiling. I didn’t really know what game he was playing, so I answered a bit apprehensively.
“What do you mean?”
He chuckled. “How’s life been treating you? I haven’t seen you since middle school Jen. I thought we’d catch up?”
“Oh, well um I’ve been…good I guess” I paused, not really sure how to answer his question.
I mean I haven’t seen this kid in four years, and our last encounters weren’t the best, and all of a sudden he returns with godlike good looks and acts as if everything between us is fine and dandy? What the hell is up with this boy!?!
I wasn’t going to put up with his little game any longer. If he was going to get his revenge on me, he might as well just get it over with.
“Look Matt,” I walked over to him “I don’t know what you’re trying to do to me, but let me just tell you, you must be CRAZY to come back here after all that went down” he stood up and I shoved my finger to his chest, poking him accusingly. “and I’m sorry for what happened back then, I truly am, but if you’re here to get revenge on me, let me just tell you,” my confidence grew as I got all up in his face—well not literally because he had almost a good foot over me, but figuratively.
And just like that, I stopped my little rampage as I realized, there’s nothing I can do to stop him from getting revenge on me. He could easily do it, and everything I’ve worked for can disappear just like that.
I mean, I may be popular and powerful (with the whole student body president thing) but the social hierarchy at school is an extremely delicate balance, and if someone like Matt with his freaking ridiculous Hollister model-type looks comes in, he’ll make his way to the top in no time (assuming he avoids Dylan and his buddies for a while). And once at the top, Matt is literally capable of anything...including taking me down.
As all these thoughts ran through my mind, I felt my hand go limp and my face drop as I just stared blankly at his deliciously chiseled chest peaking out from his button up shirt, which unfortunately for me, was right at my eye level.
I was snapped out of my little mind spaz-attack when his big warm hand grabbed my own after I’d stopped poking him accusingly, and I swear the second he touched me, it was like all the sensory neurons in that hand went crazy.
His touch literally sent tingles up my arm and throughout my entire body. I desperately suppressed the shivers and goosebumps that he was causing me to have.
He finally spoke up, “Jen, I’m not here to get revenge on you at all,” he said oh so seductively (although he probably didn’t do it on purpose…his voice is just THAT sexy). I could feel our bodies moving closer and closer together to the point where my chest was barely touching his, and I don’t know what the hell possessed me to move closer to him, but I was just so mesmerized by his sky blue orb-like eyes, and when I peeked down at his lips, I nearly melted in my multi-strap M.I.A. gladiator sandals because those lips…dayum! So ridiculously inviting …I…could…maybe…just……
“Yo Matt! I just unlocked a new level, dude!” Ben’s voice rang across the hall shocking me out of…well whatever I was doing. I jumped back and so did Matt.
Stupid Ben and his stupid video games. Way to ruin the moment, idiot! Wait…moment? Was I seriously just having a moment with Matthew McClure? Oh my god what is happening to me!?!
“Uh, I guess I’ll see you later Jen” Matt said in a voice filled with…disappointment? No, that couldn’t be it. He gave me one last little smile as he walked out of my room and closed the door behind him.
I let out the breath I’d been holding in and dramatically threw myself on my bed. What the hell is going on with me? Was I really just about to kiss Matthew McClure? I have a freaking boyfriend for god’s sake!
“UUUUGGGHHH!” I huffed as I buried my face into my pillow. I so needed a best friend right now!
It was around 11pm when the McClures finally left. I wasn’t in the mood to go downstairs and say goodnight because I’d have to face Matt again, and frankly, that isn’t something I’m ready for.
I washed my face, brushed my teeth, changed into my pajamas, and snuggled into bed. What a day! I thought to myself.
Before I could forget, I grabbed my phone and quickly texted Britt: Hey come over tomorrow, I seriously need to talk to you!
Then I drifted off to sleep, hoping that the last 24 hours were just some crazy dream and when I woke up, Matt wouldn’t be my neighbor, Brooke and Miles would still be right next door, and everything would be back to normal.
