Andres lay on the ground, catching his breath after the grueling battle. He’d given everything he had, and his body throbbed with the impact of Garrick’s punch. As the adrenaline wore off, a deep ache set in, reminding him just how hard he’d pushed himself.
Garrick reached a hand down, his face softened by respect. “Not bad, kid. Not many can say they’ve landed a hit on me. Welcome to the real world of adventuring.”
Andres took the hand, his pride swelling as he was pulled to his feet. “Thanks, old man. You sure know how to put someone through their paces.”
Garrick chuckled, “You’ve got guts. With a little more discipline, you could go far. Here.” He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small card and handing it to Andres. The Adventurer’s Card, worn and weathered, bore the symbol of a phoenix intertwined with a sword. “You’ve earned this.”
Andres took the card, feeling its weight. “What does it do, exactly?”
Garrick smirked. “It’ll open doors for you, kid. Gives you access to more resources, better quests, and places that are usually off-limits to rookies.” He leaned closer. “And, you’ll find it useful if you ever head into any of the guild halls.”
Haruki approached, nodding approvingly as he glanced between the card and Andres. “Told you it’d be worth it, didn’t I?”
Andres rolled his eyes, but a smile crept onto his face. “Alright, you were right—this time.”
Garrick clapped a heavy hand on both their shoulders. “Now, the two of you look like you’re set on an adventure. Frostveil Tundra, if I heard right? Dangerous place for young adventurers. The cold’s brutal, and the creatures are relentless.”
Haruki looked at Andres. “It’s nothing we can’t handle together.”
Andres nodded, the fire of determination rekindling in his eyes. “Right. We’re ready.”
But Garrick’s gaze grew serious. “A word of advice, boys. In the Tundra, you’ll face more than just beasts. The cold has a way of exposing weakness, of making you face parts of yourself you didn’t even know existed.” He paused. “Stay strong. Lean on each other. And if things get tough, remember that courage sometimes means knowing when to pull back.”
They both nodded, sensing the gravity of his words. Haruki turned to Andres. “Let’s stock up, get what we need, and set out at dawn.”
The pair bid Garrick farewell and made their way through the hall, already discussing provisions and strategies for the tundra. Andres felt the excitement bubble up again, and he glanced at Haruki with a grin. “We’ll conquer this. Together.”
Once they were done, they left the hall and headed to the bustling market. The vibrant sounds of traders hawking their wares filled the air, creating a lively atmosphere.
“Alright, let’s sell these wolf bones and spirit dust,” Haruki said, holding up a bundle of items. “We’ll get some good gold for them.”
After some haggling, Haruki managed to sell 50 wolf bones and 50 spirit dust for a total of 600 gold. His eyes lit up at the prospect of their earnings. “Perfect! Now we can stock up on supplies!”
They made their way to the potion store next. The shop was filled with colorful vials and jars, each containing various potions and ingredients. After scanning the shelves, Haruki approached the counter.
“I’ll take ten standard health potions, please. How much are they?” he asked.
The shopkeeper nodded, calculating the cost. “Each potion is 50 gold, so that’ll be 500 gold in total.”
Haruki counted out the gold, but just as he was about to hand it over, Andres interrupted, “Wait! Are you sure we need all those? That’s a lot of gold to spend on potions. I think we'd be fine without them!”
“Andres, come on,” Haruki replied, his voice steady but insistent. “We can’t take chances. Frostveil Tundra is known for its harsh conditions. It’s better to be overprepared than underprepared.”
“But 500 gold? That’s a scam!” Andres protested, crossing his arms.
“It’s not a scam if it keeps us alive,” Haruki countered, his gaze firm. “I’d rather have the potions and not need them than need them and not have them.”
Seeing the determination in Haruki’s eyes, Andres sighed, relenting. “Fine, but if we end up not using them, I’m taking that gold out of your share!”
With a small smile, Haruki replied, “Deal. Now, let’s gear up for our adventure!”
After purchasing the potions, the two friends left the market, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them in the Frostveil Tundra, unaware of the lurking danger that had already set its sights on them.
The bustling streets of the town seemed lively as ever, but there was an undercurrent of unease in the air, almost as if unseen eyes watched their every move.
“Something wrong?” Haruki asked, noticing Andres’s lingering gaze.
Andres shrugged, trying to shake off the feeling. “It’s probably nothing, just… feels like we’re being watched.”
Haruki’s face turned serious, his hand instinctively resting on his weapon. “Keep your guard up. You’re not usually wrong about these things.”
They reached the outskirts of town and began their journey north toward the Frostveil Tundra. The air grew colder with each step, a reminder of the unforgiving landscape that awaited them. Just as they were about to leave the village behind, an older woman approached, her eyes sharp yet kind.
“Heading to the Tundra, are you?” she asked, her voice soft yet somehow commanding.
Andres and Haruki nodded. She extended her hand, revealing a small amulet shaped like a snowflake with a warm, subtle glow. “Take this. It’s enchanted. The Tundra’s curse reaches even the strongest adventurers, sapping their strength in its harshest corners.”
Haruki accepted it with a bow. “Thank you, ma’am. But who are you?”
The woman simply smiled, her eyes holding a glint of mystery. “Just an old friend of Garrick’s. Call it… a favor.”
They nodded, each of them pocketing the amulet with a sense of gratitude mixed with curiosity. The woman vanished into the crowd as quickly as she’d appeared, leaving them to ponder her true intentions.
As they set out, Andres glanced at Haruki with a smirk. “Guess we’re not as alone as we thought.”
“Let’s hope we have a few more ‘friends’ out there in the Tundra,” Haruki replied, his voice steady but tinged with caution.
Hours later, the once-green landscape faded to icy blue and white. The Frostveil Tundra stretched out before them, cold and silent. Snowflakes whipped through the air, and the chill gnawed at their bones, despite their warm cloaks.
They pressed on, but it wasn’t long before shadows seemed to flicker in the periphery, darting among the frozen trees. Haruki stopped, signaling Andres to stay alert.
“Did you see that?” Andres whispered, his voice muffled by the snow-covered landscape.
“Yeah. We’re not alone.” Haruki tightened his grip on his weapon, his stance guarded.
A piercing howl echoed through the Tundra, chilling them more than the frost-laden wind ever could. Emerging from the shadows, massive ice hounds with glowing, ethereal eyes surrounded them. The hounds’ breaths hung in the air, and their eyes gleamed with malevolence.
“Looks like we’ll need those potions after all,” Haruki remarked with a wry grin, his eyes scanning their attackers.
Andres grinned back, flames sparking along the edge of his bolo. “Guess I owe you this one, partner.”
The two friends took their stances, ready to face whatever challenges the Tundra threw their way, with their newfound amulets and the knowledge that this was only the beginning.
