3rd person pov:

Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker were the heart and soul of the band "Sunset Echoes," a pop-rock duo that had quickly gained a devoted following. Kylie was the fiery lead vocalist with an electric stage presence, her golden-brown curls bouncing with every dramatic note she hit. Malia, on the other hand, was the cool and collected guitarist, her fingers flying over the strings with an effortless grace that captivated the audience. They were inseparable—not just on stage but off it, too. Best friends since middle school, they had formed the band as a fun side project that unexpectedly took off.

But lately, something had shifted. At least, for Kylie.

It had started small—a flutter in her stomach when Malia laughed at one of her jokes, a warmth in her chest when their hands brushed while passing guitar picks. At first, Kylie chalked it up to the rush of their growing fame or the excitement of being on stage together. But the feelings didn’t go away. They only grew stronger, and soon, Kylie couldn’t ignore the truth: she had a crush on her best friend.

This realization left her in a tailspin. Kylie was naturally outgoing, but the thought of confessing her feelings to Malia made her clam up. What if it ruined everything? What if Malia didn’t feel the same way? What if she laughed or, worse, felt uncomfortable?

Instead of facing her emotions, Kylie began avoiding Malia. She canceled their usual jam sessions, citing “songwriting burnout.” During rehearsals, she kept conversations strictly professional, avoiding their usual banter. Malia noticed the change almost immediately.

“Hey, are you okay?” Malia asked one afternoon after practice. They were packing up their gear, and Kylie had barely said two words to her.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Kylie replied quickly, her voice a little too high-pitched to be convincing.

“You’ve been acting... different,” Malia pressed, concern in her dark brown eyes. “Did I do something?”

“No! No, of course not,” Kylie said, avoiding eye contact. “I’m just tired, you know? The band’s been a lot lately.”

Malia didn’t seem convinced, but she let it go. For the next few weeks, Kylie kept her distance. She missed their inside jokes, their late-night songwriting marathons, and the way Malia always knew how to cheer her up. But every time she thought about confessing her feelings, fear paralyzed her.

The breaking point came one evening during their soundcheck for a big concert. Kylie was so distracted that she missed her cue twice, and Malia finally snapped.

“Kylie, what is going on with you?” Malia asked, frustration lacing her tone as they sat backstage after the soundcheck. “You’ve been weird for weeks, and now it’s affecting the band. Talk to me.”

Kylie hesitated, her heart pounding. This was it. There was no way out of this conversation.

“I…” Kylie started, her voice barely above a whisper. She took a deep breath, her hands trembling. “I’ve been avoiding you because I have feelings for you.”

Malia’s eyes widened in surprise, and Kylie immediately panicked. “I know it’s stupid, and I shouldn’t have said anything. Forget I—”

“Kylie,” Malia interrupted, her voice soft. She reached out, placing a hand over Kylie’s trembling one. “You like me?”

Kylie nodded, her cheeks flaming with embarrassment. “Yeah. I know it’s probably one-sided, and I didn’t want to make things awkward, but I couldn’t keep pretending everything was normal.”

Malia was silent for a moment, and Kylie’s stomach churned. But then Malia smiled—a small, shy smile that made Kylie’s heart skip a beat.

“Why didn’t you just tell me?” Malia asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kylie blinked. “Wait, what?”

“I like you too, Kylie,” Malia admitted, her cheeks dusted with pink. “I didn’t know if you felt the same way, so I didn’t say anything.”

Kylie stared at her, stunned. “You... you do?”

Malia nodded, her smile growing. “Yeah. You’re my best friend, but somewhere along the way, it became more than that. I’ve just been too scared to ruin what we have.”

Relief and happiness flooded through Kylie. “So, we’re both idiots?” she said, laughing nervously.

Malia laughed too. “Yeah, pretty much.”

They sat there for a moment, grinning at each other like lovesick fools. Finally, Malia broke the silence. “So, what now?”

“Well,” Kylie said, her confidence returning, “we could start by going on a real date. You know, after we rock this concert.”

Malia’s smile widened. “Deal.”

That night, Sunset Echoes gave one of their best performances yet, their chemistry on stage more electric than ever. And as they played their final song, Kylie caught Malia’s eye and grinned. For the first time in weeks, she felt like everything was exactly as it should be.
