"Ready for the second shift, boot?" Officer Wellington slapped Brooks back, knocking her into a daze that she was unwillingly sent into."Incoming!" One soldier shouted which caused a rickashay of the platoon yelling incoming so each solider would take cover.
Emily jumped down to the ground by a nearby tree and took cover next to two of her comrades. Sergeant Bradford and Private Cook.
After everyone took cover all the soldiers stood up and soon enough realized that their platoon leader didn't have a chance to take cover.
Eighteen-year-old Emily had wide eyes as the litter team ran over to the platoon leader to assess his injuries.
Emily knew what she sighed up from, but it was completely different when you are facing a harsh reality.
"Let go Brooks." Sergeant Bradford slap a hand on Brooks back to get her attention away from their fallen platoon leader.
They had to continue their mission.
Emily nodded her head and blinked away tears that were threatening to fall from her dark brown eyes.
It was just last night that Emily had a conversation with her Platoon Leader and got to know a little bit about his brand new fiancé and the wedding they were planning.
"Boot?" Wellington raised a brow as he waved a hand in front of her face. "Brooks?" Wellington shook Brooks arm softly knowing her out of the memory.
"I-um- sorry." Brooks coughed awkwardly not knowing how long she was sent into the memory.
That hasn't happened in a while. .
"Are you okay? Should I-" Wellington started. He knew of Brooks previous service since he was her training officer. He knew there's a chance that she could have some sort of ptsd. It was very likely especially after being deployed.
"I just got caught up in a- I'm okay." Brooks decided not to tell him she got lost in memories from being deployed.
He would only end up telling Sergeant Gray and that was the last thing she wanted. Especially with it being the start of her second shift.
"Okay. ." Wellington didn't seemed convinced, but he wasn't going to push her. "You ready for your second shift?"
"Ready, sir." Brooks nodded her head and already started to walk over to check out their equipment.
Wellington watched his rookie walk off and couldn't help but be worried for her.
It was a weird feeling. But he was just concerned for her well being as her training officer.

"Dispatch this is 7-Adam-13 and we got a what could be a 7charlie." Brooks called up dispatch as Wellington flashed the shop lights at the strange man in a black ski mask walking like he was up to no good.
He was looking around and when he spotted the shop that's when his eyes widen and he started running.
"We got the suspect 6 foot Caucasian male with a black jacket, black jeans, and a black ski mask fleeing the area." Brooks called to dispatch once again to let them know what happened. "7-Adam-13is heading west on Hollywood Boulevard."
"Alright it looks like we are gonna have a little fun and catch the suspect on foot." Wellington told his boot as he pulled the shop to the side and the pair hopped out.
"7-Adam-13 approaching suspect on foot." Brooks called up just before running along side Wellington after the suspect.
"I'll go west, you got east!" Wellington shouted before running west and brooks followed his orders by running east.
After a couple of minutes Brooks had eyes on the suspect.
Brooks energy increased once she locked eyes with the man and headed straight towards him up until he reached in his pocket and pulled out what looked to be a weapon.
"Suspect on 4th Street and posses a weapon." Brooks called into her radio.
Brooks eyes widen when she saw the suspect point the weapon at her and before she could even react she was shoved to the ground behind a large garbage bin with heavy weight on top of her.
Brooks groaned as she looked up and saw her training officer with wide eyes.
"What the hell was that?!" Wellington shouted, but didn't go into either detail as he grabbed her arm and pulled her back up.
They saw the suspect get tased to the ground as Wellington called for backup at some point and Bradford and Chen showed up as they were the closest shop.
Wellington shook his head as he looked over to his rookie.
"Why did you push me?" Brooks let out annoyed that Wellington didn't give her a chance to react.
"You can't hesitate. You were seconds away from being shot!" Wellington raised his voice for the first time which surprised Brooks slightly.
"I saw it. I was going to react. You just-" Brooks was interrupted.
"You stood there like a deer in headlights." Wellington informed the rookie. "You stood in the open for too long and you can't seem to realize that."
Brooks swallowed her feelings. "I didn't realize."
"This is the second time in one day. If it happens again I have no choice, but to tell Sergeant Gray." Wellington walked off to meet Chen and Bradford who had the suspect in custody.
After a few seconds Brooks followed right behind and stopped by his side.
"Are you losing your spark Wellington?" Bradford joked to his friend that has never let a suspect go before.
"Not that there's a good excuse, but the boot and I had got caught up." Wellington didn't go into further detail and he wasn't going to rat out his rookie.
Bradford glanced over at Brooks who didn't dare look at him in the eyes.
He quieted his eyes at her body language, something that he was very familiar with; Especially when out on the line.
Something wasn't right and it would only get her injured or worse. .
"We'll take the suspect back and book him." Wellington took the suspect out of Chen's hands and started walking off with Brooks following behind him.
"Something was off right? Or was that just me?" Chen let out as she watched her newly found friend being off her game.
"Let's go boot." Bradford ignored what his rookie said and started walking towards the shop, causing Chen to go jogging after him to catch up.
