Vanessa's heart sank as she read the notice posted on the dormitory bulletin board. Professor Silva's signature loomed at the bottom, accompanied by a short, ominous message:
"Mandatory for all bonded pairs or trios: Simulation 317. Report to the training hall tomorrow morning at 0800. Prepare accordingly."
Sky, leaning over her shoulder, let out a low whistle. "Sounds serious."
"It always is with Silva," Vanessa muttered, her stomach twisting.
Alexander joined them, his green eyes scanning the notice. "Simulation 317. That's a combat trial. They've been ramping up the difficulty this year."
Vanessa frowned. "Why now?"
"Because they're testing us," Alexander replied, his tone matter-of-fact. "The bond makes us stronger, but it also makes us vulnerable. They want to see if we can handle it."
"Well," Sky said with a grin, "we're going to ace it, right?"
Vanessa didn't respond immediately. She could feel the bond thrumming faintly, a mix of Alexander's resolve and Sky's easy confidence. But beneath it all, her own uncertainty lingered.
"Right," she said finally, though her voice lacked conviction.
The next morning, Vanessa stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her gear. The lightweight armor provided by the school fit snugly, offering both protection and flexibility. Her fingers lingered on the locket around her neck, the familiar weight grounding her.
"You're quiet this morning," Terra said, watching her from the bed. "Nervous?"
Vanessa sighed. "A little. This isn't just another training session. It's different."
Terra smiled gently. "You'll do great. You've got Sky and Alexander, and you're stronger than you think."
Vanessa managed a faint smile. "Thanks, Terra."
The training hall buzzed with activity as students gathered for their respective trials. Professor Silva stood at the center, his commanding presence silencing the room as he began to speak.
"Today's simulation is designed to test more than just your combat skills," Silva said, his voice steady. "It will challenge your ability to trust your teammates, to think critically under pressure, and to adapt to the unknown. Fail, and you'll be sent back to remedial training. Succeed, and you'll move one step closer to mastering your bond."
Vanessa glanced at Alexander and Sky, both of whom wore expressions of quiet determination. The bond thrummed faintly, a steady reminder of their connection.
"Team 17," Silva called. "Vanessa, Alexander, Sky. Step forward."
Vanessa's heart pounded as they approached the platform. The runes etched into its surface glowed faintly, pulsating with magic. Silva gestured for them to step onto the platform, and the world around them shifted in a blur of light and sound.
