Vanessa woke with a start, her breathing ragged and her heart pounding. The dream was fresh in her mind-a swirling storm of light and shadow, fractured memories and voices that felt familiar yet distant.
"You're close now," the voice had whispered. "But the veil hides the truth."
She sat up, clutching her locket as if it might anchor her. The bond hummed faintly, a soothing pulse that reminded her she wasn't alone. She closed her eyes, focusing on the connection. Alexander's steadiness and Sky's warmth flowed through her like a lifeline.
"What are you trying to tell me?" she murmured to the locket, its cool metal pressing against her palm.
The answer, she suspected, lay somewhere beyond the veil.
The next morning, Vanessa found herself summoned to Professor Dowling's office. The headmistress rarely called on students unless it was urgent, and Vanessa's stomach churned with anticipation as she knocked on the door.
"Come in," Dowling's calm voice called.
Vanessa stepped inside, her gaze immediately drawn to the glowing orb on Dowling's desk. It pulsed faintly, casting intricate patterns of light on the walls.
"You've been having dreams," Dowling said, her piercing gaze meeting Vanessa's.
Vanessa hesitated, then nodded. "Yes. They feel... important."
"They are," Dowling replied. "Your connection to the elemental plane is growing stronger. These dreams are guiding you, but they're also a warning."
"A warning?" Vanessa asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Dowling nodded, her expression grave. "The veil between realms is thinning. If it shatters, the consequences will be catastrophic-for both the magical world and the human one."
Vanessa's chest tightened. "What can I do?"
"Follow the visions," Dowling said. "They'll lead you to the answers you seek. But be careful-the path will not be easy."
Later that day, Vanessa recounted her conversation with Dowling to Alexander and Sky as they sat in their usual spot by the lake. Both listened intently, their expressions a mix of concern and determination.
