The Lomax parents are based off of my parents. Just so you know, the cool parents do exist I promise.
"It's not too, poor like?" Johnny has never looked at me like that. I really wasn't sure what to do. "Was that offensive? I mean I'm, I am poor and- do you think everybody is gonna know that I don't really wear fancy dresses-"
"You're overthinking it. Not to mention that dress is like 500 dollars." He links his arm with mine as I freeze up. "Don't think too hard you might end up actually using your brain. Come on."
"I wasn't even talking about the dress. I meant my face." He tuts at me, his parents stopping us both in our paths. "Hello."
"Hello? You making your friends read scripts now are you mouse?" Johnny groans. "Vince don't call him that while we're here."
"People might think we're a family. Insane. Hi. He talks about you all the time." His mum was staring at me like I had something on my head.
"Weird. Bad things?" He snickers. "No. All good things. Did he tell you to wear that? Or do you just own it?"
"No he told me I had to. Gave me a dress code. Way out of my price limit-" they're gonna have me kicked out. I mean 500? Way over? Seriously?
"Maria used to be the same. She'd freak out over 3 dollar cheese and now she only has cheese older than me. Also it's a very expensive dress, none of the models would wear it."
"Oh god." Johnny whispered as his dad carried on talking. "3 thousand dollars on a dress is pretty insane I'll be honest."
"What?!" I felt every last bit of my dignity slip. I was nothing but a shell. "I'm sorry. I'll leave."
"Why? Because you yelled?" His mum asked, laughing as she shook her head. "Don't even worry. You're here to make whatever he's about to say a lot easier on him so you get a free pass."
"I don't have- I have nothing to, to say. I'm just here with my friend." They both nod. "Mhm. Yeah absolutely I know that. But she's also here to keep you from being yelled at. So what is it? You get suspended again? You need early bail money? What's happening?"
"You're gonna yell at me?" They both looked at each other with that face that Johnny makes when he's thinking. "Depends. Cause if you need bail money then yes."
"But if you're about to tell us that you just got married, then I think I would be confused." Oh shit. "Yes. No that would be very strange."
"The legal age is 18." That's his comeback. "That's not the problem here mouse- did you get married? Did he make you? You can beat him up. He's weaker when he's around others."
"We didn't get married- what would be the problem? That would be the only problem if we got married." They both tilted their heads, suddenly all I could see was just three different versions of Johnny all staring confused.
"Johnny." His mum said quietly. "Didn't do something wrong?"
"No. It's just, I mean did you want to marry a girl? Or is it like a- an issue with Imogene? I mean what's going on?"
Oh. Shit.
"What do you mean? Marry a girl? What the hell are you insinuating?" He's so fucking stupid.
"Oh my god, Maria we might've been wrong," you're not he's fucking dense. "No. I am not wrong, I called it with Tom. I know what I know."
"Know what?" It was so unbelievably funny to me that he just thinks they're making fun of him. "I mean if he's not then does that mean we have to worry about teen pregnancy again?"
They're the kind of parents you'd see in a movie and think, those aren't real. They were real. He looked at her the way Charlie looks at Tyler and I think that might be the cutest thing I've ever seen.
"Am I missing something?" He asked, quietly. "I think they already know." They both nodded. "Off topic but Imogene have you ever thought about modelling?"
"I don't think." Johnny giggled, shaking his head like he was ashamed. "She doesn't think ever."
"You should think about modelling." Johnny nodded. "You should. What do you mean already know? There's no way."
"Believe it bitch. We can act surprised if you want, you can say it and we'll be like 'oh my god what a surprise'."
"Or we can be like- really cool adopt it and just kind of 'cool' our way through it. Your choice really." Johnny takes my hand, dragging me away toward the bar. "I hate my life."
"Your mum is way cooler than you were letting on." He hums. "She is. But she's still- really deep into her religion so, I was worried."
"Hey at least you know-" the man stopped in front of me. I gave him the same dirty look he'd given me. "You must be that Joanne girls, daughter."
"Trees found in forest." I gasped. "You're just as rude as my son tells me." Johnny squeezes my hand. "I find it quite funny that you stand here and shit talk me for no other reason than my mother wouldn't date you when she was 16."
"Johnny I don't think you understand the reputation you've set for yourself by, befriending this girl. Nothing more than a spoiled little gold digger."
"Don't know what words are? How am I spoiled and a gold digger? Are you backwards? Are you stupid? Do you need a therapist?"
"It was good seeing you Mr Seavey." I frantically shook my head. "Wrong, wrong. You suck." I stick my tongue out at him. Walking away before I started laughing. "Really?"
"He doesn't know anything it's fine." I know I wasn't supposed to be drinking but I really couldn't help myself. He's just there and it's making me queasy.
Every time he looks at me all I can do is stick my tongue out at him. I had nothing else.
I had this weird wave of anxiety hit my chest and my head. "We can dance." Johnny whispered, holding me against his chest with his arms hiding my face. "It's okay."
