You know, sometimes, you just don't tell anybody nonetheless everybody what's going on. Like I have had a girlfriend since... I don't know, a month ago, I think. But I don't think she's really going to remain my girlfriend considering that we're currently arguing to the brink of sanity.
"Shut up, Alan! Do you even hear me?"
"Hear you what, Alice?" I shout back.
"HEAR THAT I CAN'T STAND YOUR NONSENSE, about how you always tell me to do this and that and this and that and I CAN'T, I just can't, deal with you anymore!" She throws her hands around and yells at me, her face slightly red from the sheer force of her voice.
I try to think of something to say, but just like trying to grasp air, I somehow come up empty, so this is what I say. "I can't deal with you anymore."
She throws her hands up again, and slams them down on her thighs. "Okay, then let's break up."
It hangs in the air, like early morning mist, and the tension is high enough to be cut with a knife. I kind of want to bring in a knife, and cut this tension, figuratively, of course. Although waving a knife around may be kind of stress relieving.
My thoughts somehow wander to Cass, but I direct myself away from that and back at Alice, who is in front of me.
"Okay, then let's break up."
And there we have it, she's not my girlfriend anymore.
She throws her hands up one last time, and then opens her back door.
"Now get out."
I walk out with my hands in my pockets, and she shuts it with force I didn't show she had in her. I hop down her steps, and walk away, trying to walk to the nearby convenience store. I have it in me to buy something for the group, maybe some drinks. I could certainly do with a cold Coke right now.
"Alan? Alan!" Cass comes behind me by my right, and I'm frozen as she rubs her mittened hands together. The only thing I can think about is if she saw me coming out of Alice's house.
"How are you?" I greet her with a nod of my head, breath visible in the cold air. "I'm good," she responds. She looks back at Alice's house, and my heart drops. "Hey, what were you doing in Alice's house?" She looks at me, and I'm freaking out.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh.
The answer flies out of my mouth nervously, "Personal problems, you know."
She nods, "Sure, but I'm here if you need to, you know, talk about personal problems."
I nod, and I shove my hands in my pockets.
We walk in silence for probably like five minutes, and then Cass speaks up again.
"Umm, where are we going?"
"The convenience store." Her mouth makes an O shape, and we fall back into a comfortable silence, before Cass pulls me aside.
I rub the spot where she pulled me, "What did I do to deserve that?"
She grins at me with an excited face. "Nothing, just look!" She points somewhere, and I whip around to take a look at what she's pointing at.
I spot what she's talking about, Alessa talking to some boy. A boy with blond hair and turquoise eyes that just sparkle. Dang, talk about a knockout. Knockout, I mouth to Cass.
She looks at me and smiles, and mouths you're a knockout, too.
The boy smiles, and dimples all of a sudden appear, and Alessa gets the slightest red.
We can't hear their conversation, but Cass and I are eyebrowing each other, fangirling and fanboying about this secretly. They start to walk in our direction, and we lean further from the corner of the brick wall, trying to hide.
"That's cool... I also know some swordsmanship, wanna meet up and you know - " she makes some motions, I think, with her hands, and the boy laughs. "Yeah, sure, umm, this Saturday?" He has some sort of British accent, and I think Alessa nods next, because he says good and laughs again.
"Elijah Collins, there's a delivery you need to make!" Croaks someone from the convenience store's door, also in a slight British accent. I peep out the corner a bit. Wait a second... isn't that Mrs. Collins, the old shopkeeper? I look at Cass, and she comes over to peer at the shopkeeper as well, and we exchange looks.
The boy, or Elijah, I suppose, runs a hand through his golden hair and sports a crooked grin. "Seems like I gotta go." He runs to the shopkeeper, and the door closes behind him. Alessa waves bye, and starts back home in the opposite direction of us. We wait until we're clear and she's out of sight before we walk out of our little hiding place.
We walk to the glass door of the convenience store, and out pops the boy, tumbling with a lot of boxes. One falls, and I pick it up to give to him. "Thanks! You two make a lovely couple, by the way," he says with a wink.
Cass heats up a bit, and our fingers tighten around each other. I sort of stumble, my mind flashing back to Alice who is now out of my life. "Uhh, we're not really, umm -"
Elijah looks apologetic and grimaces. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, I don't know why I bloody thought that."
"It's fine," Cass pipes in, and Elijah smiles.
"Well, I gotta get going. You know, deliveries!" He winks at us, and waves bye as he walks away.
We enter the store, and the old storekeeper waves at us.
"Hello, the same drinks as usual?"
"Yes, thank you." She wraps up the drinks, but then puts in an extra one.
"Umm, excuse me," Cass points out before I can, "I think you put in an extra."
The storekeeper smiles, "I know, I know. Just take it. Think of it as thanks for helping Elijah. He really misses out on kid life to help me at the store." She sighs a bit. "Anyways, it's a new drink I hear is getting popular." She perks up and winks at us, and we laugh and thank her, forci - coercing her into accepting a tip.
"Oh," she adds, right before we leave, "the town council is tomorrow, tell your folks the Cliffes that it would do good for them to be there." She nods, and all I can think is the fact that they really aren't my folks. Add that and the breakup with Alice to my personal problems.
We leave, and make for home.
