I'm totally alright.
Lucas is totally alright.
I'm trying to convince myself of this, but it's obviously not going well, because I'm crying. Sobbing. Crying. Same thing.
The machine that's monitoring his heart rate spikes up and up and down, showing his steady heartbeat, but that doesn't do anything to quell my fears.
He's in the safe zone here, but how's he safe when he has a brain tumor?
The doctors tried to comfort me, all of us, that it's fine, that the numbers show that he has a good chance of surviving. That he has meningioma, a type of brain tumor that is usually benign, and apparently is benign in Lucas. That means he doesn't have cancer. So far.
Meningioma also has grades of how bad it is, and so far it's Grade I in Lucas.
I keep hope in the small things, or at least I'm trying to. It's a bit hard when they're lying right in front of you, taking in shallow breaths as if they're in a coma. I squeeze his hand gently, and he stirs a bit, but remains asleep for the most part.
"Hey," Cali says, leaning against the doorway with her arms crossed.
You know, I always admired her ability to not develop dark spots under her eyes. She could pull an all-nighter and yet still act like she has the most energy in the world the next day. She used to be like that, but more and more she's quiet. But she still has energy.
Yet, here she is, standing by the doorway with the worst case of dark spots under her eyes. She didn't sleep these last few days, but after having a ten minute crying session, I didn't see her shed one tear or hear her shed a tear.
Nothing.
She's like that, keeping it in.
"Hey," I say softly back. "He's doing well."
She nods, and waves her hand in the motion of an offer, "I can take over, for now at least." She melts a bit, parts of her sort of turning a bit liquidy, but she gets it under control and keeps her form together.
"No, it's fine." I release Lucas's hand and get a better look at her from, which has thinned slightly.
"No, I insist."
You can't resist Cali when she insists, so I get up and make way for her. She sits down in the chair, and yawns, crossing her arms over her cardigan as she stares at Lucas.
I quietly remove myself from the room, closing the door behind me quietly.
