We stroll down the downtown streets of Drewberry City, which unlike the rest of the city, is more quiet and has the charm that you would think that Paris has (until reality eventually ruins your dreams). It's nice, quiet, but has a moderate amount of chatter because of its busy bustling streets.
The leaves are still green, but you can see slight taints of other colors on them, streaking the leaves for fall.
Wait, why am I narrating this chapter?
I mean, it made sense for Aria to narrate the last one, since the circle deemed it was her turn again, but me? I'm literally half down the cast line, check it! Wait... you don't know who I am now... it's Atalanta here!
Anyways, we're strolling the downtown streets, which is basically like almost everything labeled downtown. It has charm, full of old buildings and things that they must have used as the backdrop for New York instead in the movies. New York is... disappointing, to be honest, but the charm of downtown still remains.
Along both sides of the street, there are stores that have little glass storefronts, and I think Athulya is going slightly crazy because she's dragging us everywhere, telling us we should buy this and that and this and that. At this point, I'm a credit card. Which is kind of funny.
It's been a while since just the four of us Invisibles went together shopping, so I guess it's fine that we're being dragged around everywhere. It's fun. I mean, even Toast isn't complaining as much. And she actually bought something and called it "cute". I believe in miracles!
"Hey, look," Athulya says. Toast groans, but doesn't complain. "That guitar pick is so cute!" I look at where she's pointing, and see a cute swirly-resin type of guitar pick that suits her perfectly.
I feel sorry for Athulya. I won't tell her this, but I pity her. We found her glass-eyed on the street, and it took her more than a while to open up to all of us. Her dad left her mom, so she doesn't even have a clue who he is, and then her mom was murdered. Right in front of her eyes. I question how she smiles, and every time I see a taint of sadness. I once mentioned that we could try to find her dad, and I saw mixed emotions, before hate took over and she said "No", walking out the door without looking back.
You know, I just want her to be happy.
She races in the store's direction, and we follow her, albeit sort of reluctantly.
But suddenly I see a person in black grab her from behind and cover her mouth. If you have never seen someone get kidnapped, then you should know the thing that haunts you is their eyes. Her eyes are wide, and she's spinning around, making it harder for the kidnapper to hold her properly. All three of us scream as loud as we can, but since we have just walked out of downtown to a more rural area, nobody is around to hear it. I race to get there, and Toast and Alex also run as fast as they can, but suddenly another person grabs Alex.
That's when you know something is wrong, and it's now a safety in numbers thing.
The kidnappers disappear into a van, and I run with Toast, but suddenly she looks back and half-screams half-yells.
"They're coming!"
We hold hands and run, but at that point it's obviously useless.
"We're not going to make it!" Toast yells. We're not going to make it downtown.
I can feel my heart going thud, thud, thud, thud, in my chest, like it's trying to burst out and leap away. I can also feel an unhealthy amount of adrenaline rushing through my body, and I'm running as fast as I humanly can.
But it's so far away, we're not going to make it.
We have a clear disadvantage, we're high school students, and those people are healthy adults that probably trained every day in the gym by the size of their biceps.
We run to a large nearby store door, and we jiggle the handle a few times, but it's locked. We start panicking and look around.
It's closed.
I blink, and close my eyes, then grab Toast's hand to start to run again. I'm breathing heavily, panting like a dog after walking on a hundred degree day for an hour. I can't, I can't.
I push myself, but even then there is a limit.
I can see Toast look at me as we run, and she looks up and down, her breaths heavy.
"I don't think I can keep this up for long," she says. We've been running faster than probably the bolt for a few minutes, and I know what she means, because my heart is about to give out and collapse. I can hear it, feel it, with every step and vibration of my body.
I can hear them behind me, their footsteps, thudding on the pavement.
We start to hyperventilate, because that's always what happens when you get kidnapped. I hyperventilated the first, second, and now this is the third time. It's an automatic reaction, knowing what's to come but your brain trying to figure out a way out and not accepting it.
We close our eyes and we feel them drag us away.
