Zayran's age : Eleven
The loud sobs fill the air, echoing off the sterile walls of the hospital room. I blink at my little friend, who sits beside me on the hospital bed, crying her eyes out.
Her hamster just died in a brutal way—escaped its cage, ran into the busy street, and got crushed by a car.
She told me she was about to chase after it, but her nanny grabbed her hand tight, stopping her from running into the chaos of the road.
That all went down just minutes before she came to see me.
Now, her nanny has gone to get snacks, trying to make her feel better, gently patting her back, telling her it was an accident and that we couldn't do anything about it.
I don't really know how to comfort her while she's crying, so I just sit there, letting her cry it out. Honestly, I feel sad too. I liked that little hamster; it was fun to play with.
I reach out awkwardly and put my hand on her shoulder. "H-Hey, it's okay."
She looks up at me with those big, watery eyes and shakes her head, hiccuping between sobs.
"No, i-it's not! I didn't even get to say goodbye to my baby! Why did it have to die like t-that? I should've locked its cage better!"
Her sobs hit me hard, twisting something in my chest. I get it; losing something you care about sucks, but part of me thinks there's a lesson in all this. Life is unfair, and sometimes it just happens. It's not like I can fix it, but I wish I could say something that would help her feel better.
"I-I'll get you a new hamster. Don't cry." I blurt out, my voice barely above a whisper.
She halts her sobbing, sniffing as she looks up at me with those enormous, tear-filled eyes, glistening like two pools of sorrow.
"But still, it won't be my Milky." She cries out loudly.
"I'll get you the exact same one."
She pauses, her tears momentarily forgotten as she stares at me, hiccuping softly.
"R-really? Y-you'll get me the s-same exact one like my baby?" Her voice is filled with hope, and I nod, feeling a flicker of warmth in my chest as her face lights up, cheeks still wet but now glowing with a hint of joy.
She wipes her palms across her tear-stained cheeks and grins widely, "Are you going to marry me too?"
I blink at her question, frowning. "Why would I marry you?"
