Two weeks. It had been two weeks since that day out on the Quidditch pitch when you'd decided to call it quits with Tom Riddle. Since then, you'd done a good job of limiting your interactions with him as much as you possibly could, despite the fact that you two were in the same friend circle.

Things within the group had become tense since that day, with no one knowing how to work their way around the issue. You'd found a way to handle it without having to be around Tom for too long, rather choosing to be with Esme, Abraxas and Avery more.

It was finally the middle of the week, and you couldn't help the sigh of relief that escaped your lips upon leaving your last lesson of the day. "Thank Merlin, we've only got a week til Christmas break," Valentina stated, glancing towards you. "As happy as I'd love to be about it, my parents are hosting their annual Winter Ball again." You groan, memories of last year's flooding in immediately.

Abraxas, who was previously behind the two of you, ran up upon the mention of the Winter Ball. "That Ball is the highlight of my year, I'll have you know." He huffed, obviously filled with pride at the idea of hosting it - again, and again, and again.

"Oh we know," Val murmured under her breath, though you let out a light chuckle at her words. Your brother shot her a look out of the corner of his eyes, before bringing his gaze back to you, "Look on the bright side, at least all of our friends will be there."

Your smile instantly dropped. Not only would your friends be there, but so would Tom. Over the years that you'd known him, he'd managed to woo your parents upon his first meeting with them in Year 4. Since then, your parents had been adamant on inviting him to any party they hosted.

As if he realized it just as you did, Abraxas' expression turned to regret, "Fuck, I forgot." You shot him a casual shrug, looking to Valentina, who was already ahead of the two of you. She'd somehow heard the conversation, you realised, as she slowed down to match your pace. "You sure you'll be okay with him there?" She asked softly, and you nodded hesitantly, not knowing how you'd handle the whole situation.

"Well," Abraxas started, swinging an arm around your shoulder and pulling you closer to him, "we'll be there too, so you won't be stuck with him. I promise you that." You smiled just as you elbowed him in the gut. He reeled back, exaggerating the pain as he groaned.

Abraxas muttered the password, and you watched as the common room door swung open. Valentina had chosen to go straight to the library to study, leaving you and your brother to go back to your common room alone. The grin on your face from one of Abraxas' stupid jokes faded when your gaze fell on Tom.

No. Not just Tom. He was sat on one of the couches, with a book in one hand. A girl was sat at his side, her arm wrapped around his as she watched him read. Never had he let you be so intimate with him. Never would he be so tolerant of you grabbing onto his arm the way this girl was doing.

You were sure the sound of your heart shattering had echoed through the common room, because Tom snapped his gaze to you within moments of you noticing them. His eyes widened ever so slightly, something along the lines of regret flashing through them, but it was gone before you could even process it.
