Red stared at the flickering words on the navigation panel, his breathing shallow. You're lost, Alpha. What did it mean? And why did it feel so familiar, like a thread tugging at the edge of his memory?
The ship's alarm blared again, louder this time. Over the comms, Blue's voice snapped through the static. "Red, where the hell are you? The reactor's about to melt down!"
Red tore his gaze from the panel and bolted toward the reactor room. He couldn't afford to let his thoughts distract him—at least, not yet. As much as he wanted to chase the truth, the crew's survival came first.
The reactor room was a scene of chaos. Lime and Blue were already there, frantically pressing buttons and yanking wires. Lime glanced at Red as he entered, their smirk returning, but this time it carried a different weight.
"Decided to join us, huh?" Lime said casually, though their eyes lingered on him for a beat too long.
"Shut it," Blue snapped. "Red, get to the second panel. We're running out of time!"
Red didn't hesitate, rushing to the opposite side of the reactor. His fingers worked on autopilot, flipping switches and entering codes. Despite the urgency, his mind churned. Lime's smirk. The words on the navigation panel. The voice in his head. Everything felt connected, but how?
The reactor stabilized with a final beep, and the alarms fell silent. Blue let out a relieved sigh, wiping their visor. "That was too close. I don't know what's gotten into everyone lately, but we can't afford any more distractions."
Red avoided Blue's glare and turned to leave, but Lime's voice stopped him.
"Hey, Red."
He paused, glancing back. Lime leaned against the console, their expression unreadable.
"Funny how you always seem to show up at the right time," Lime said, their tone casual but pointed.
Red frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Lime shrugged, pushing off the console. "Nothing. Just... you've always been full of surprises." They walked past him, their voice dropping to a whisper only he could hear. "Maybe it's time you stop running from them."
Red stood frozen as Lime left the room, Blue muttering something about "idiots" before following suit. The silence pressed down on him, and he felt the weight of Lime's words sink in.
Later, in his private quarters, Red sat on the edge of his bunk, staring at a small, faded photo tucked inside his glove. It was the only thing he had left of Yellow. The image was warped and scratched, but he could still make out their familiar smile.
His mind wandered back to the voice on the navigation panel, the flickering words, and Lime's cryptic comments. He couldn't ignore it any longer. There was something out there—something calling to him.
Red stood, his resolve hardening. If he was going to find answers, he couldn't wait for them to come to him. He would have to search, to confront whatever truths lay hidden in the stars.
He opened the ship's map on his terminal, his eyes scanning for anything out of the ordinary. There—an uncharted sector, marked only by a faint, flickering star. The same star he had seen in the cockpit.
"That's where it begins," Red muttered to himself.
But he couldn't do this alone. No matter how much he distrusted Lime, they seemed to know more than they let on. And as much as he hated to admit it, he needed their help.
With a deep breath, Red left his quarters, heading toward Lime's. It was time to stop running. Time to face the legacy of the IMPOSTER and uncover the truth about his past.
