The ship pushed through the anomaly, surrounded by blinding, swirling light. Red clenched the controls, his knuckles white. The readings on the console were all over the place—frequencies he'd never seen before, temperatures fluctuating wildly, and bursts of unknown energy flickering across the monitors.Lime, for once, was quiet, though their eyes were sharp, scanning the displays. The playful smirk was gone, replaced by a serious expression that made Red's stomach flip for a completely different reason.
Then, as suddenly as the chaos began, the light cleared. The ship emerged into an eerie stillness. Outside the window stretched a vast, empty expanse dotted with massive, floating structures—half ruins, half machinery—glowing faintly with an otherworldly light. The silence in the cockpit was almost as loud as the alarms had been moments ago.
"Whoa," Lime whispered, their voice uncharacteristically soft. "What is this place?"
Red exhaled slowly, releasing a breath he didn't realize he was holding. His eyes swept over the alien structures, the strange, angular designs, and the faintly pulsing lights that seemed almost alive. For a moment, even he forgot about Lime's earlier antics. "This... this is incredible," he said under his breath. "I think we've just discovered something no one's ever seen before."
Lime turned to look at him, their face unreadable. "Yeah, Red," they said softly. "No one but us."
That simple statement carried weight—too much weight. Red felt the tension creeping back, the way Lime's voice lingered just a second too long. He straightened in his seat, clearing his throat. "We need to get a closer look. Something here might explain everything."
He initiated the scan of the nearest structure, but Lime wasn't done with him yet. They leaned back in their chair, stretching casually, their legs brushing against his. Red glared at them. "Seriously? We're in uncharted territory, and you're still doing this?"
Lime shrugged, their grin returning like it had never left. "What can I say? Tense situations bring out the best in me. Or the worst, depending on how you look at it."
Red rolled his eyes and focused on the screen. The scan revealed strange symbols etched into the structure, glowing faintly. A small docking port appeared on the side, big enough for their ship. "We're going in," he said firmly, steering toward the port.
"Bold move, Captain," Lime quipped, though there was a flicker of hesitation in their voice. "Hope you know what you're doing."
"I do," Red snapped, though he wasn't sure if he was convincing Lime or himself. He guided the ship carefully into the port, locking it in place with a soft hiss of pressurization. "Gear up. We're exploring this thing."
As they moved to the airlock, the tension between them hung in the air, unspoken but palpable. Lime fell into step beside him, closer than necessary. Their shoulder brushed his, and Red bit back a sharp retort. Now wasn't the time for another argument.
The airlock hissed open, revealing a dimly lit corridor. The walls were covered in glowing symbols, and a faint hum vibrated through the air. Red stepped forward cautiously, his flashlight cutting through the shadows.
"You know," Lime said behind him, their voice back to that maddeningly playful tone, "this is kinda romantic. Just the two of us, exploring the unknown. Like a date, but with more danger."
Red froze, turning to glare at them. "Lime. Enough."
Lime raised their hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. I'll behave. For now."
But as they moved deeper into the structure, Lime's teasing gave way to something quieter. Their eyes darted around the corridor, their fingers brushing against the glowing walls as if trying to feel the history beneath them. It was the first time Red had seen them like this—curious, almost reverent. It unsettled him.
"What do you think this place is?" Lime asked finally, their voice softer than usual.
Red hesitated. "I don't know," he admitted. "But it feels... important. Like it's been waiting for us."
They entered a larger chamber, the walls covered in strange, flowing text that glowed faintly as they approached. At the center of the room was a pedestal with a small, glowing orb hovering above it. Red stepped forward cautiously, but Lime grabbed his arm.
"Careful," they said, their tone serious. "We don't know what that thing does."
Red looked at Lime, surprised by their concern. "I thought you liked living dangerously."
Lime smirked, though it didn't quite reach their eyes. "Yeah, but I'm not stupid."
Red turned back to the orb, his curiosity outweighing his caution. He reached out slowly, his fingers brushing the surface. The moment he made contact, the chamber lit up, the walls alive with moving symbols. A voice echoed around them, speaking in a language Red couldn't understand.
The orb pulsed, and suddenly, Red's mind was flooded with images—flashes of the past, of figures he didn't recognize but felt connected to. A familiar face appeared—Yellow. Then another—a shadowy figure he couldn't quite make out. The vision ended as quickly as it began, leaving him breathless.
"Red?" Lime's voice cut through the fog. They were holding his arm, their face unusually serious. "What just happened?"
"I... I saw something," Red said, his voice shaky. "Yellow. And someone else. I think this place... it's tied to my past."
Lime's hand lingered on his arm, their grip firm but not teasing. For once, there was no smirk, no joke—just quiet concern. "You okay?" they asked, their voice soft.
Red nodded, though his mind was spinning. "Yeah. I just... I need a minute."
For the first time since the mission began, Lime stepped back, giving him space. It was a relief—but also strangely disconcerting. Red realized he'd grown used to Lime's constant presence, their relentless teasing. Without it, the silence felt heavier.
But for now, the quiet was what he needed. As he stared at the glowing orb, he knew this was only the beginning of the answers he'd been searching for—and the complications that came with them.
