Last Leaf

I always wonder,
What life is like,
For that last leaf,

The one still clinging,
Desperate to live,
To stay,

Against wind,
Against snow,
Against winter,

I envy it,
The determination,
No matter the fate,

It is an inspiration,
A hope and dream,
A blessing.

Clutched to the branch,
Rain and frost pelting it,
I envy the leaf. Never giving up.

Until it's last battle,
Where it falls to the barren ground,
Howling a war cry,

Dead in cold December,
Only to crush and perish on the dirt,
Watching other valiant leaves.
