Oh my goshhhh... Guys! I wrote something! 😖👏🔥
Branch checked his watch for the fifth time that day. He turned behind him where his girlfriend was picking basically every flower in sight.
"Poppy? Shouldn't we be stopping soon? This is a pretty long hike."
Poppy giggled as a butterfly landed on her nose. "Branch, I told you: the hike trail goes in a loop. We should be able to find exactly where we started with no trouble."
Branch raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, it goes in a loop alright. I think we've passed that tree with the bird nest in front of the trunk three times."
Poppy walked up next to him and looked at the tree. "Huh. You're right." She shrugged and lightly grabbed his hand. "It's fine. We should be good."
Branch allowed her to pull him on, but he was glancing nervously at the sky.
Looked like it would start raining within an hour or so.
He just hoped they'd be fine.
~~
It didn't rain within an hour. It rained within fifteen minutes.
As soon as the thunder began to roll, Branch gripped Poppy's hand tighter.
"Dangit, it's starting to storm," he groaned. "We should probably get under some cover!"
Poppy just stood there, watching as the small drips of rain dropped from above them.
"Oh, it's so pretty. Don't you think?"
Lightning flared above them, and Branch flinched. He looked around warily.
"There!" He pointed to a nearby mushroom. "We should be able to hide in there! Has a long enough top to cover us."
He tried to pull her toward the mushroom, but she didn't bother to move her feet.
She looked up at him and grinned.
"Wanna dance?"
The rain had started to get heavier, and now her dress was half soaked, along with her hair, which had started to droop down from her ponytail, and had made her bangs become plastered to her face.
This was not the weather to be dancing in as far as Branch was concerned.
"Dance?" Branch frowned. "Poppy, there's lightning. We should be under cover."
"Oh, we can be under cover any time of our lives," Poppy scoffed, waving the idea off with her hand. "C'mon, it'll be fun."
"There isn't music," Branch argued. He wasn't about to just give in.
Poppy ignored him and tugged at his arms, dragging him into the middle of a grassy field where hundreds of angry snakes could be hiding on a damp and humid day like this.
"I've always wanted to dance in the rain." Poppy wrapped her arms around Branch's neck. "As a girl I always imagined me and my truelove, my prince charming, waltzing as the world got soaked around us."
Branch rolled his eyes. These imaginations were probably centered around Creek at the time- he had been her love interest for way before Branch had become her friend.
Plus, that was incredibly unrealistic. Both of them were soaked now, and in the middle of the forest with no instructions on how to get out.
Still, his hands wound aroind her waist and pulled her a tad bit closer.
They began to dance.
The rain was sharp and loud and came down in bucketfuls. Thunder constantly was going.
Then the lightning would flash.
Branch looked up, eyebrows creased slightly in worry. The storm seemed to only get closer.
Poppy multiple times squeezed his hand gently, and whispered, "Focus on me."
Branch turned back to her and attempted to calm down a bit.
Slowly he focused on Poppy's smile and giggle as they occasionally would step into a particularly muddy spot, or one of them would be pressed against the leaves of a tree for a moment or so.
Then she would lean onto his shoulder and closer her eyes, giving a sigh of contentment.
It didn't matter that her entire body was soaking, shivering, and her skin was a bit cold to touch.
Branch was no dryer than her. He smiled as he gave her neck a couple of light kisses, then her hair as they continued to twirl around.
Then, suddenly, a tree cracked nearby them. Branch immediately looked up and saw it slowly leaning down, getting ready to fall.
Before she could say anything, he grabbed her arm and pulled her underneath the mushroom just as the tree fell right in the positions where they had been seconds before.
Poppy watched the tree from underneath the mushroom, her habds still placed on Branch's chest. "Whoa. That was cool."
Branch sighed. "And dangerous. I knew we should have stayed underneath here. Now you're going to catch a cold."
"No I'm not," Poppy replied calmly before sneezing five times in a row.
He raised an eyebrow and she gave a small giggle. "Come on, you're just as wet as I am. Plus, don't act like you didn't enjoy the dancing."
Branch didn't answer. He sat down and Poppy sat next to him, leaning on his shoulder. His arm wrapped around her shoulders and he groaned interbally for not thinking about bringing an extra blanket with him everywhere he went.
"I don't remember the last time we had a simple dance together," was the last thing Poppy said before drifting off.
Her light breathing beside her made him yawn. Branch watched the harsh storm slowly get calmer and more quiet.
Soon trolls would be sending a search party to find the queen. But for now...
He yawned again.
"I should figure out how to get back home," were his last thoughts before his head rested on top of Poppy's and he fell asleep.
Yup. That's it.👀
Yay.
