Mugdha sat across from her friends, Divya and Riddhi, at the NGO. The dim light flickered overhead, casting uneasy shadows on their faces, amplifying the tension in the room. The usual hum of activity felt muted, as if even the building itself recoiled from the weight of their discussion.
"Last night, the police conducted a rescue operation," Divya began, her voice barely above a whisper, thick with unease. "They managed to save several girls from human traffickers. They're here now."
Mugdha's eyes flicked toward a room down the hallway, where a cluster of young girls sat huddled together, their frail bodies trembling like brittle leaves in the wind. The hollow look in their eyes turned her stomach, each one a living reminder of the horrors they had endured.
"Are they all okay?" she asked softly, her voice betraying the storm of emotions brewing inside her.
Riddhi hesitated, her fingers twisting nervously. "The staff is trying to care for them, but..." She trailed off, her gaze dropping to the floor.
"But what?" Mugdha's tone was sharper now, her body leaning forward as if bracing for impact.
Divya sighed, glancing at Riddhi before speaking again. "One girl is still missing. Her name is Siya."
Mugdha's heart skipped a beat. Her jaw tightened as the weight of those words settled over her. "Missing? What do you mean? Why wasn't she rescued?"
Riddhi exhaled sharply, frustration bleeding into her voice. "A little girl told us Siya was moved to another location before the raid. The police know where she is, but..."
