~LucasV point of view~
After walking past Harumi and her family, I finally managed to find my room. I slid the key into the lock, opened the door, and stepped inside, quickly closing and locking it behind me. I dropped my bag onto the table and let out a long sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose.
"Okay... so I live in an apartment that, soon enough, will be partially consumed by the Great Devourer," I muttered to myself. The thought sent a shiver down my spine. "Great... just great."
The memory of running into Harumi earlier crossed my mind again, and a wave of unease washed over me. 'So I really am inside the story...' I thought, though I decided to push the idea aside for now. There were more pressing concerns.
I glanced around my modest new apartment. It wasn't fancy, but it was enough for me. "I need to find a job," I said out loud, pacing slightly. Then I remembered-finding work wouldn't be easy, especially when I looked around the same age as Harumi and Lloyd.
'This is going to be hard... really hard,' I thought, rubbing the back of my neck. Finally, exhaustion got the better of me. I tossed my jacket aside, headed to the small bedroom, and collapsed onto the bed. Within minutes, I was out cold.
~Next day, LucasV point of view~
The light streaming through my bedroom window pulled me out of sleep. I groaned softly, rubbing my eyes before sitting up. 'Morning already...?' I thought as I stretched, feeling the stiffness from yesterday's move.
After a quick shower and grabbing a few essentials, I zipped my bag shut and threw it over my shoulder. "Okay... everything I need is already in here," I said to myself as I slung my key around my finger.
I stepped out of my room and locked the door behind me. Just as I clicked the lock into place, I heard the sound of another door opening. I glanced to my side, only to freeze slightly when I saw Harumi's father stepping out of the neighboring apartment.
We both stared at each other for a moment, equally surprised.
"H-hello, Mr...," I stammered, not sure how to address him properly.
To my relief, he let out a hearty chuckle. "Well, good morning, LucasV, right?" he said warmly, as if yesterday's encounter had left a good impression.
"Yes, sir," I replied politely, giving a small nod.
"You're up early. Off somewhere already?" he asked, locking his door as well.
I scratched the back of my head, offering a sheepish smile. "Yeah, I'm trying to find a job today... something to keep me busy."
He raised an eyebrow, his expression showing mild curiosity. "A job? At your age? That's impressive. Most kids your age are still just worrying about school."
"Well... I guess I'm a little different," I said, choosing my words carefully.
He gave me a nod of approval. "You've got a good attitude. If you ever need help settling in or advice, don't hesitate to ask. We're just next door."
"Thank you, sir. I'll keep that in mind," I replied sincerely, feeling slightly more at ease.
With that, Harumi's father smiled and made his way down the hall. I watched him leave before turning toward the elevator, exhaling deeply.
'At least they're nice... but I really need to figure things out quickly,' I thought as I stepped inside the elevator and pressed the button for the ground floor. I had no idea where to start, but I was determined to make this work.
As the elevator descended, I couldn't shake the feeling that things were only going to get more complicated from here.
I sighed as the elevator stopped and the doors slid open. Stepping out into the hallway, I resolved to start my search for a job. As I walked out of the apartment building, I couldn't help but feel the weight of how mundane the day ahead seemed.
'This is so boring... I should listen to some music,' I thought, reaching into my bag to pull out my earbuds. I placed them in my ears, connected them to my phone, and hit play. The familiar melody immediately began to flow, and I felt a sense of calm washing over me.
As I wandered through the bustling streets of the city, the rhythm of the music overtook me. Humming along at first, I soon began to sing softly.
🎵 Hold on a minute, make me relive it with you... 🎵
🎵 'Cause you're the only thing I want to feel for a second, never forgetting how you... 🎵
🎵 You haunt me like a déjà vu... 🎵My voice was quiet at first, but I got more into it, letting the music guide me. I closed my eyes briefly, feeling the emotions in the song as I walked.
Unbeknownst to me, people around me started to notice. Whispers began to spread.
"Look at that girl... her voice is beautiful," a woman said to someone beside her.
"I don't think that's a girl," a man replied, clearly intrigued. "But he's really good at singing."
"Wow, he's so pretty..." a young girl murmured, her eyes wide with admiration.
"Yeah... but what song is that?" a boy asked, tilting his head. "I've never heard those lyrics before."
'They're whispering... I can hear them,' I thought, trying to keep my focus on the song. I slowly brought my singing to a stop and hummed the final notes softly as I opened my eyes, taking in my surroundings.
I noticed the curious glances from passersby, but I tried to shrug it off. 'Focus, Lucas. You need to find a job,' I reminded myself, adjusting my bag and scanning the street ahead.
The city was lively, with its towering buildings and colorful signs. Somewhere in this maze of activity, there had to be a place willing to hire someone like me. Taking a deep breath, I started walking again, my determination reignited.
