It was a typical day at the Matildas' training center, where the team was in the middle of a break after a morning session. Y/n, the 16-year-old baby of the team, was sprawled on the couch in the lounge area, her ADHD-driven energy bouncing off the walls as she fiddled with her phone, trying to stay still. She was often the one to bring the youthful spark to the team, but recently, she had been feeling a little bit more reserved.
The other girls, as usual, were a comforting presence, each taking turns to check in on her. Kyra was being her usual playful, "annoying" older sister, teasing Y/n about everything from her choice of snacks to how many water bottles she had scattered around the room. Macca, Caitlin, and Alana each joined in, but there was always a protective edge in the teasing, a reminder that no matter how much fun they had, Y/n would always have a family here.
And then, there was Mini.
Mini had truly become like a second mother to Y/n. Her warmth and sense of stability had helped Y/n through more than she could count, especially considering the emotional wounds from her abusive foster past. Over the last few months, Mini's presence had grown even more significant, like a calm and steady rock for Y/n in the whirlwind of life.
It was during one of those quieter moments, when the laughter had died down, that Mini pulled Y/n aside. The younger girl had just managed to calm down after a particularly chaotic game of charades, her usual high energy finally in check, when Mini approached her with an almost glowing smile.
"Hey, kiddo, can we talk?"
Y/n blinked, a little caught off guard. Mini didn't usually pull her aside for serious talks. "Uh, sure. What's up?"
Mini sat beside her on the couch, taking Y/n's hands in her own. There was an excitement in her eyes, something Y/n hadn't seen before. "Well... I have some news. And I want you to hear it from me first."
Y/n looked at her with wide eyes, suddenly worried. "What's going on, Mini?"
Mini's smile softened. "I'm pregnant, Y/n. You're going to be a big sister."
At first, Y/n just stared at her, the words not quite sinking in. Mini was pregnant?
A flurry of emotions started swirling in Y/n's mind. She had heard rumors—Mini had been glowing recently, but she hadn't thought much of it. And now, here was the truth, the reality of it, all of a sudden.
"I-I'm going to be a big sister?" Y/n repeated, the idea almost too big for her to process.
Mini chuckled softly, squeezing Y/n's hands gently. "Yeah, kiddo. I know it's a lot, but I wanted you to be the first to know."
Y/n's heart raced. A baby. A sibling. The thought of it was both exhilarating and overwhelming. She had never had a sibling, let alone a younger one. She could feel her ADHD kicking in, her mind racing as she tried to wrap her head around the news.
"I... I don't know how to be a big sister," Y/n admitted, her voice quiet. She had never had the example of a family that could guide her on how to care for others.
Mini smiled warmly, brushing Y/n's hair out of her face. "You already are a big sister. To all of us. You help us keep the team together, you look out for people. This is just... the next step. You'll figure it out."
Over the next few weeks, Y/n found herself in a whirlwind of new emotions and responsibilities. Her ADHD often made it difficult to focus, but Mini's calming presence kept her grounded as she processed what it would mean to have a younger sibling.
At training, Y/n noticed herself becoming more protective, more aware of how she interacted with others. She wanted to be a role model, just like Mini had been for her. She started helping more, not just with the training drills but with taking care of the younger teammates, watching out for them the way Mini had watched out for her.
