It was your third week at the office, and already you felt like you were still finding your footing. The long days, the names and faces you barely remembered, and the whirlwind of information constantly thrown at you-it was all overwhelming. So, when you stepped into the elevator at the end of the day, ready to head home, the last thing you expected was to be stuck.
The doors had barely closed when the lights flickered and then everything plunged into darkness. You froze, gripping the elevator rail, heart racing as the elevator came to an abrupt halt.
"Great," you muttered under your breath, trying to remain calm. The faint emergency lights flickered on, casting a dim glow around the space.
"Looks like we're going to be here for a while."
The calm voice caught you off guard. You turned your head quickly, realizing you weren't alone. In the faint light, you could make out a tall figure standing just across from you. He was leaning casually against the wall, his posture relaxed despite the sudden situation. He had sharp features, his hair slightly tousled, and his suit-though simple-looked almost too perfect for someone trapped in an elevator.
"I hope you're not in a hurry," he added, a soft smile tugging at his lips.
You managed a small laugh, though your nerves were still on edge. "Not really. But I didn't plan on spending the evening in an elevator either."
He chuckled, his laugh light and soothing. "No one ever does."
You found yourself glancing at him again, curiosity bubbling up. He didn't seem like one of the usual employees-there was something different about him. But you were new here, so you didn't know everyone yet.
"I'm Minghao, by the way," he said, extending a hand toward you.
You hesitated for just a moment before shaking it. "Y/N. Nice to meet you... though the circumstances could be better."
Minghao smiled, and for a moment, the tension in the air seemed to lift. "You're new here, aren't you?" he asked, tilting his head slightly.
"Yeah, only a few weeks in. Still trying to figure everything out."
"I figured," he replied. "I haven't seen you around much."
You raised an eyebrow. "Do you work here often? I don't think I've seen you either."
Minghao shrugged, leaning back against the wall. "I come and go. My role's a bit... flexible."
That answer was vague, but you didn't press. Maybe he was one of the executives who worked behind the scenes or someone important enough to have a more fluid schedule. Either way, you didn't know much about the inner workings of the company yet.
"So, what brought you to this place?" Minghao asked, his tone still gentle but full of curiosity.
You sighed, thinking back to the whirlwind of changes in your life recently. "I wanted a fresh start, I guess. New city, new job... trying to get out of my comfort zone."
He nodded, his expression thoughtful. "That's brave. A lot of people are too afraid to step out of what they know."
You offered a small smile. "Or maybe I'm just reckless."
Minghao grinned at that, the corners of his eyes crinkling. "I doubt that."
The more you spoke with him, the more you felt at ease. His calm demeanor had a way of soothing your nerves, and his curiosity about you felt genuine. There was something about him, though-something you couldn't quite put your finger on. He was charming, yes, but not in the flashy, over-the-top way you'd seen before. His charm was quiet, subtle, like he wasn't trying to impress anyone.
"So," you asked after a beat of silence, "what do you do here, exactly?"
Minghao's lips quirked up into a slight smile, his gaze shifting for just a moment. "Oh, you know... I handle things."
You raised an eyebrow, unimpressed by the vagueness. "That's not much of an answer."
He laughed softly, the sound warm and gentle. "You're right. But let's just say I have my hands in a lot of different projects."
You couldn't help but smile at his evasiveness. "Mysterious, are we?"
"I try to keep people guessing," he replied with a wink.
Despite his reluctance to reveal too much, you found yourself enjoying the back-and-forth banter. The situation, while unusual, was starting to feel less tense.
You shared more about your job and how you were adjusting, while Minghao listened attentively, occasionally offering a witty remark that made you laugh. It was strange how comfortable you felt with him, considering you barely knew him. He had a presence that made you feel at ease-like you didn't need to be on guard.
After what felt like an hour, the faint hum of electricity returned, and the lights flickered back on. The elevator shuddered, and with a soft ding, the doors slid open.
You both stepped out into the hallway, the familiar sounds of the office now drifting back to your ears. The spell of the elevator was broken, and reality came crashing back in. You turned to Minghao, suddenly unsure of what to say now that the moment was over.
"Well, thanks for keeping me company," you said, offering him a smile.
"Anytime," he replied, his eyes meeting yours. There was something unreadable in his gaze-something you couldn't quite decipher.
As you walked away, you felt his presence linger in your thoughts. Who was he, really?
Hours later, as you sat at your home desk finishing up some last minute paperwork, your phone buzzed with a notification. You glanced at the screen and froze.
It was an email from an unfamiliar address.
Subject: Let's continue where we left off?
Y/N,
It seems we didn't get enough time to talk in the elevator. How about dinner sometime? I'd love to hear more about your bold move to the city-and maybe share a few secrets of my own.
Let me know when you're free.
-Minghao
You blinked at the screen, rereading the message. Minghao was asking you out? The quiet, mysterious guy from the elevator?
Something about the way the email was written made you curious again. Who exactly was he? As you absentmindedly clicked on his email address, your heart skipped a beat.
Xu Minghao, son of the CEO.
The realization hit you all at once. Minghao wasn't just an employee-he was the CEO's son. And he had spent all that time in the elevator with you, never once mentioning it.
You stared at the email, unsure whether to laugh or panic. The CEO's son had just asked you out. And you had no idea who he was the entire time.
Maybe he wasn't the only one who liked to keep people guessing.
