Bellamy and Iris had spent days training most of the camp on how to handle guns. Now, thanks to their effort, a system of guards patrolled the perimeter, keeping everyone relatively safe—or as safe as they could be.
Today, though, none of that mattered. It was Unity Day, and Iris couldn't have cared less. The whole thing was bullshit if you asked her. A holiday to celebrate how the Ark came together? Please. They'd literally blown up the thirteenth station killing hundreds of people to achieve "unity."
Still, she found herself hanging around the crowd gathered near the screen broadcasting Jaha's speech. Her dad was somewhere in the background, and she wanted to catch a glimpse of him.
The screen flickered, Jaha's overly polished voice filling the camp.
"My friends, this is a historic Unity Day. Every year, we mark the moment our ancestors of the 12 stations joined to form The Ark, but this is the last time we do so while aboard her. Next year, on the ground."The people on the Ark broke into applause, but on Earth, the reaction was... less enthusiastic.
"Yeah, after we busted our asses down here," Miller muttered, leaning against a tree with his arms crossed. "Someone shut this guy up already."
Iris rolled her eyes. "You know, bitching about it isn't gonna make it any better, Miller."
Raven, standing next to her, smirked. "No kidding. Why don't you shut up, Miller? No one's forcing you to watch this crap."
Iris snorted, nudging Raven lightly with her elbow. "Nice one, Reyes. Didn't know you had such a sharp tongue."
Raven raised an eyebrow, a playful glint in her eye. "Stick around, Thornton. You might learn something."
Their attention drifted, both girls zoning out of the speech. Instead, their eyes landed on Clarke and Finn, who were standing way too close to each other, whispering like no one else existed. Raven's smirk disappeared in an instant, her jaw tightening as her eyes darkened.
Iris noticed the shift immediately. "Hey,-"
Before she could finish, Jasper burst out of a nearby tent, holding up a massive jug like he'd just won the lottery.
"Whooooo! Hell yeah!" he shouted. "Monty strikes again!"
The crowd's mood shifted instantly as people cheered. Jasper waved the jug like it was a trophy. "I call this batch Unity Juice! Who's thirsty?"
